As I understand this from 5 minutes of research, car crash dummies are either a 5' 105 lb dummy that has boobs but is shaped more like a man, or like a 5'9 170 lb male. The NHTSA says they use a 50th percentile male and a 5th percentile female to make sure vehicles are relatively safe for all types of drivers. But the weight of the average woman has absolutely ballooned to over 170 lbs. Combine this with some research that says women are more likely to be injured in similar car crashes compared to men (ignoring the fact that women drive smaller cars, have lower bone density, etc), some people are blaming the fact that there are few test dummies that represent the average female. Unfortunately if you replace the tiny "female" dummy with an average female dummy, cars are probably going to become less safe for smaller women.
