1189 - Richard I (the Lion-Hearted) was crowned king of England at Westminster Abbey.

1658 - Oliver Cromwell, the lord protector of England, died.

1783 - The Treaty of Paris officially ended the Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain.

1861 - During the Civil War, Confederate forces invaded the border state of Kentucky, which had declared its neutrality in the conflict.

1939 - Great Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war on Germany during World War II, two days after Germany invaded Poland. The same day, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the British liner SS Athenia some 250 miles off the Irish coast, killing more than 100 out of the 1,400 or so people on board.

1943 - Allied forces invaded Italy during World War II, the same day Italian officials signed a secret armistice with the Allies.

1976 - The unmanned U.S. spacecraft Viking II landed on Mars and took the first pictures of the planet's surface.

1978 - Pope John Paul I was installed as the 264th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

1999 - A French judge closed a two-year inquiry into the car crash that killed Princess Diana, dismissing all charges against nine photographers and a press motorcyclist, and concluding the accident was caused by an inebriated driver.

2003 - Paul Hill, a former minister who said he murdered an abortion doctor and his escort to save the lives of unborn babies, was executed in Florida by injection, becoming the first person put to death in the United States for anti-abortion violence.

2005 - President George W. Bush ordered more than 7,000 active duty forces to the Gulf Coast as his administration intensified efforts to rescue Katrina survivors and send aid to the hurricane-ravaged region in the face of criticism it did not act quickly enough.

2009 - A private funeral service was held in Glendale, California, for pop superstar Michael Jackson, whose body was entombed in a mausoleum more than two months after his death.

2017 - North Korea carried out its sixth and strongest nuclear test, detonating what it said was a hydrogen bomb.

2019 - Walmart said it would stop selling ammunition for handguns and short-barrel rifles, and the store chain requested that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores; the announcement followed a shooting at a Walmart store in Texas that left 22 people dead.

1895 - The first professional football game was played in Latrobe, PA. The Latrobe YMCA defeated the Jeannette Athletic Club 12-0.

1928 - Ty Cobb records his 4,189th and final hit of his career.

1932 - Jimmie Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics joins Babe Ruth and Hack Wilson as the only players to date to hit 50 home runs in a season.

1957 - Warren Spahn (Milwaukee Braves) recorded his 41st career shutout.

1966 - Bobby Orr (Boston Bruins) signed his first NHL contract. The two-year deal paid $70,000 plus a signing bonus, gave Orr the top salary in hockey.

1970 - Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, 57, died of cancer in Washington, D.C.

1972 - Hank Aaron breaks Stan Musial's major league record with his 6,135th career total base.

1974 - Frank Robinson was named the first African-American manager in major league baseball.

1974 - Oscar Robertson retires from basketball.

1977 - Japanese baseball superstar Sadaharu Oh hits his 756th career home run.

1988 - #2 Nebraska defeated Utah State 63-13.

1994 - University of Florida quarterback Terry Dean throws an NCAA record seven touchdown passes in the first half in a 70-21 rout of New Mexico State.

1994 - The University of Miami, in a 56-0 win over Georgia Southern, sets an NCAA record with its 58th consecutive home win, breaking the record of 57 set by Alabama from 1962 to 1982.

1995 - In their NFL debut games, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers both lose; the Jaguars fell to the Houston Oilers 10-3 while the Panthers were defeated by the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in overtime.

1999 - Mario Lemieux's ownership group officially took over the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins. Lemieux became the first player in the modern era of sports to buy the team he had once played for.

2000 - Kenny Lofton tied a major league record when he scored in his 18th straight game.

2001 - In just his 11th start, St. Louis Cardinals' rookie pitcher Bud Smith no-hits the San Diego Padres, 4-0.

2005 - Nebraska opens the season with a 25-7 win over Maine.

2006 - Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie wins the WNBA's Most Valuable Player award, joining Sheryl Swoopes as the league's only three-time winners.

2006 - Andre Agassi plays in his final career tennis match.

2008 - It is announced the new NBA franchise in Oklahoma City will use the nickname "Thunder".

2011 - #10 Nebraska opens the season with a 40-7 win over Chattanooga.

2016 - Nebraska opens the season with a 43-10 win over Fresno State.


2020 - The Philadelphia Phillies retire Dick Allen's #15.
