1534 - The English Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, making King Henry VIII head of the Church of England.

1912 - Vice President James S. Sherman, running for a second term of office with President William Howard Taft, died six days before Election Day.

1938 - A radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds," starring Orson Welles, caused nationwide panic among listeners who believed Earth was in the midst of an alien invasion.

1945 - The U.S. government announced the end of shoe rationing, effective at midnight.

1953 - Gen. George C. Marshall won the Nobel Peace Prize for originating the Marshall Plan.

1961 - The Soviet Union tested a hydrogen bomb, the “Tsar Bomba,” with a force estimated at about 50 megatons.

1972 - Forty-five people were killed when an Illinois Central Gulf commuter train was struck from behind by another train on Chicago’s South Side.

1975 - The New York Daily News ran the headline “Ford to City: Drop Dead” a day after President Gerald R. Ford said he would veto any proposed federal bailout of New York City.

2001 - Ukraine destroyed its last nuclear missile silo, fulfilling a pledge to give up the vast nuclear arsenal it had inherited after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

2005 - The body of Rosa Parks arrived at the U.S. Capitol, where the civil rights icon became the first woman to lie in honor in the Rotunda; President George W. Bush and congressional leaders paused to lay wreaths by her casket.

2012 - The Walt Disney Co. announced that it would buy Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion, paving the way for a new “Star Wars” trilogy.

1954 - The first use of a 24-second shot clock in a professional basketball game took place in a contest between the Boston Celtics and Rochester Royals.

1973 - Tom Seaver becomes the first non-20-game winner to win the Cy Young Award.

1974 - Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round of a 15-round bout in Kinshasa, Zaire to regain the world heavyweight championship in a bout that was dubbed "The Rumble in the Jungle."

1988 - The New York Jets beat the Pittsburgh Steelers for the first time in franchise history.

1992 - Magic Johnson played his last game in the NBA before retiring for the second and last time.

1997 - Violet Palmer became the first woman to officiate an NBA game. The game was between the Dallas Mavericks and the Vancouver Grizzlies.

2001 - In New York City, U.S. President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch at Game 3 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

2001 - Michael Jordan returned to the NBA with the Washington Wizards after a 3 1/2 year retirement. The Wizards lost 93-91 to the New York Knicks.

2013 - The Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in six games to win their third World Series in 10 years.

2016 - The Oakland Raiders set a single-game NFL record with 23 penalties in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2019 - The Washington Nationals defeat the Houston Astros in seven games to win their first World Series.
