1400 - Geoffrey Chaucer died in London.

1415 - The Battle of Agincourt between England and France during the Hundred Years War took place.

1760 - Britain's King George III succeeded his late grandfather, George II.

1854 - The “Charge of the Light Brigade” took place during the Crimean War as an English brigade of more than 600 men charged the Russian army, suffering heavy losses.

1910 - “America the Beautiful,” with words by Katharine Lee Bates and music by Samuel A. Ward, was first published.

1962 - John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

1962 - U.S. Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson presented photographic evidence of Soviet missile bases in Cuba to the U.N. Security Council.

1971 - The U.N. General Assembly voted to admit mainland China and expel Taiwan.

1983 - The United States invaded the Caribbean nation of Grenada on the orders of President Ronald Reagan, who said the action was necessary to protect U.S. citizens there.

1994 - Susan Smith of Union, South Carolina claimed that a black carjacker had driven off with her two sons. She later confessed to drowning the children and was convicted of murder.

2001 - Microsoft released its Windows XP operating system.

2002 - Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., 58, was killed in a plane crash in northern Minnesota.

2005 - U.S. military deaths in Iraq reached 2,000.

2010 - Afghan President Hamid Karzai acknowledged receiving millions of dollars in cash from Iran, adding that Washington was giving him “bags of money” as well because his office lacked funds.

2014 - The World Health Organization said more than 10,000 people had been infected with Ebola and that nearly half of them had died as the outbreak continued to spread.

2019 - A 40-day strike that crippled General Motors’ U.S. production came to an end as workers approved a new contract.

2019 - The Pentagon awarded Microsoft a $10 billion cloud computing contract, snubbing early front-runner Amazon, whose competitive bid had drawn criticisms from President Donald Trump. (The start of the work was delayed as Amazon challenged the bidding process as flawed.)

1902 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 12-0.

1913 - Nebraska defeats Haskell 7-6.

1919 - Nebraska and Oklahoma played to a 7-7 tie.

1924 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 14-7.

1941 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 6-0.

1947 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 14-7.


1947 - The Army football team was defeated by Columbia 21-20. The team had gone unbeaten in 32
games that spanned four seasons. They had earned two national titles in the same time frame.

1952 - Nebraska and Colorado played to a 16-16 tie.

1958 - #12 Colorado defeated Nebraska 27-16.


1964 - Jim Marshall (Minnesota Vikings) picked up a San Francisco fumble and ran the wrong way 66 yards into his own team's end zone for a safety.

1969 - Nebraska defats Oklahoma State 13-3.

1975 - #4 Nebraska defeats Colorado 63-21.


1978 - Gaylord Perry became the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues when he won the award in the National League.

1980 - #9 Nebraska defeats Colorado 45-7.

1986 - Colorado upsets #3 Nebraska 20-10.


1986 - The New York Mets won Game 6 of the World Series in the 10th inning when a routine ground ball went through Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner's legs.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games to win their first World Series.

1997 - #1 Nebraska defeats Kansas 35-0.

1998 - Jason Elam (Denver Broncos) kicked a 63-yard field goal. The kick tied Tom Dempsey's 28-year-old NFL record.

1998 - Jerry Rice (San Francisco 49ers) set an NFL record when he caught a pass in his 184th consecutive game. Also during the game, Rice became the first player to surpass 17,000 career receiving yards.

1999 - Golfer Payne Stewart and five others were killed when their Learjet flew uncontrolled for four hours before crashing in South Dakota; Stewart was 42.

2000 - NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the Minnesota Timberwolves would forfeit their next five first-round draft picks and would be fined $3.5 million due to violations of the NBA's salary cap.

2003 - The Florida Marlins defeat the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series.

2003 - #14 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 28-0.

2003 - Florida State's Bobby Bowden became the winningest coach in major college football history with his 339th career victory as the Seminoles defeated Wake Forest 48-24.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 7-5 in the first World Series game to be held in Texas. The game also was the longest in World Series history at 5 hours and 41 minutes. The game actually ended on October 26th.

2008 - Nebraska defeats Baylor 32-20.

2009 - The New York Yankees won their 40th American League pennant.

2014 - #16 Nebraska defeats Rutgers 42-24.
