1797 - Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute jump from a balloon.

1836 - Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas.

1928 - Republican presidential nominee Herbert Hoover spoke of the “American system of rugged individualism” in a speech at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

1934 - Bank robber Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd was shot to death by federal agents and local police at a farm near East Liverpool, Ohio.

1954 - West Germany joined NATO.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy announced an air and naval blockade of Cuba, following the discovery of Soviet missile bases on the island.

1968 - Apollo 7 returned safely from Earth orbit, splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.

1979 - Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlevi, the deposed Shah of Iran, was allowed in the United States for medical treatment. This action led to the Iran hostage crisis.

1995 - The largest gathering of world leaders in history marked the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

2014 - A gunman shot and killed a soldier standing guard at a war memorial in Ottawa, then stormed the Canadian Parliament building before he himself was shot and killed.

1939 - The first televised pro football game was telecast from New York. Brooklyn defeated Philadelphia 23-14.

1950 - The Los Angeles Rams set an NFL record by defeating the Baltimore Colts 70-27. It was a record score for a regular season game.

1972 - The Oakland Athletics defeat the Cincinnati Reds in seven games to win the World Series.

1975 - The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Boston Red Sox in seven games to win the World Series.

2000 - Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillon rushed for an NFL single-game record 278 yards against the Denver Broncos.

2011 - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals became the third player in MLB history to hit three home runs in a World Series game.

2012 - Cyclist Lance Armstrong was formally stripped of his seven Tour de France victories and received a lifetime ban from Olympic sports after the International Cycling Union chose not to appeal doping charges against Armstrong by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

2016 - The Chicago Cubs won their first pennant since 1945, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. (The Cubs would go on to beat Cleveland in the World Series in seven games.)
