1864 - President Abraham Lincoln won re-election as he defeated Democratic challenger George B. McClellan.

1889 - Montana became the 41st state.

1892 - Former President Grover Cleveland defeated incumbent President Benjamin Harrison and became the only president in U.S. history to win non-consecutive terms in the White House.

1923 - Adolf Hitler attempted, and failed, to seize control of the German government in the Beer Hall Putsch.

1932 - Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president over incumbent President Herbert Hoover.

1950 - During the Korean War, the first jet-plane battle took place as U.S. Air Force Lt. Russell J. Brown shot down a North Korean MiG-15.

1960 - Democrat John F. Kennedy defeated Republican Richard M. Nixon to be elected the 35th president of the United States.

1966 - Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts became the first African American to be elected to the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction.

1966 - Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California.

1972 - The premium cable TV network HBO (Home Box Office) made its debut with a showing of the movie "Sometimes a Great Notion."

1974 - A federal judge in Cleveland dismissed charges against eight Ohio National Guardsmen accused of violating the civil rights of students who were killed or wounded in the 1970 Kent State shootings.

1987 - A bomb planted by the Irish Republican Army exploded as crowds gathered in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, for a ceremony honoring Britain's war dead, killing 11 people.

1988 - Vice President George H.W. Bush defeated Democratic challenger Michael Dukakis to be elected the 41st president of the United States.

1994 - In midterm elections, Republicans gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years, as well as a Senate majority.

1997 - Chinese engineers diverted the Yangtze River to make way for the Three Gorges Dam.

2000 - A statewide recount of presidential election ballots began in Florida. Earlier that day, Vice President Al Gore had telephoned Texas Gov. George W. Bush to concede, but called back about an hour later to retract his concession.

2002 - The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 1441, aimed at forcing Saddam Hussein to disarm or face “serious consequences.” President George W. Bush said the new resolution presented the Iraqi regime “with a final test.”

2004 - Thousands of U.S. troops attacked strongholds of Sunni insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq.

2010 - Talk show host Conan O'Brien made his debut on TBS.

2010 - Former kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart took the stand in Salt Lake City on the first day of testimony in the trial of Brian David Mitchell, the man accused of abducting her in June 2002 when she was 14.

2012 - Jared Lee Loughner was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the January 2011 shootings in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

2016 - Republican Donald J. Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton in an astonishing victory for a celebrity businessman and political novice; Republicans also kept control of the U.S. House and Senate.

2020 - "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek died at his Los Angeles home at age 80 after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

1942 - Parker Hall (Cleveland Rams) threw seven interceptions against the Green Bay Packers.

1954 - The American League approved the transfer of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball team to Kansas City, Missouri.

1981 - Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula recorded his 200th career NFL victory.

1986 - #7 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 35-14.

1997 - #1 Nebraska defeats Missouri 45-38 in overtime.


1997 - Nevada's John Dutton threw for 557 yards and five touchdowns in a victory over Boise State.

1998 - Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys) became the all-time rushing leader for the Cowboys. He also passed 12,000 career yards in the NFL.

2003 - #19 Nebraska defeats Kansas 24-3.

2008 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 45-35.
