1842 - Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois.

1862 - Inventor Richard J. Gatling received a U.S. patent for his rapid-fire Gatling gun.

1880 - James and John Ritty of Dayton, Ohio patented the first cash register.

1922 - Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt.

1924- Nellie T. Ross of Wyoming was elected the the nation's first woman governor, to serve out the term of her husband who had died in office.

1939 - The United States modified its neutrality stance in World War II to allow "cash and carry" purchases of arms by belligerents, a policy favoring Britain and France.

1942 - During World War II, Axis forces retreated from El Alamein in North Africa in a major victory for British forces commanded by Lt. Gen. Bernard Montgomery.

1952 - Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected president, defeating Democrat Adlai Stevenson.

1956 - Russian troops attacked Budapest and crushed the Hungarian revolt.

1979 - The American embassy in Tehran, Iran was seized by militants and 90 Americans were taken hostage; for most it was the beginning of 444 days in captivity.

1980 - Republican Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter to be elected the nation's 40th president.

1985 - To the shock and dismay of U.S. officials, Soviet defector Vitaly Yurchenko announced he was returning to the Soviet Union, charging he had been kidnapped by the CIA.

1991 - Ronald Reagan opened his presidential library in Simi Valley, California; attending were President George H.W. Bush and former presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon -- the first-ever gathering of five past and former U.S. presidents.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by an Israeli extremist while speaking at a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

2008 - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois defeated Republican John McCain to be elected the 44th president of the United States and the nation's first Black president.

2008 - California voters approved Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage and which overturned a state supreme court decision that had granted gay couples the right to marry just months earlier.

2011 - "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney died at age 92 in New York, just one month after his farewell segment on the show.

2014 - Riding a powerful wave of voter discontent, resurgent Republicans captured control of the U.S. Senate and tightened their grip on the House in midterm elections.

2016 - A federal jury found that Rolling Stone magazine, its publisher and a reporter had defamed a University of Virginia administrator in a debunked 2014 story about a gang rape at a fraternity house. (The magazine and the administrator, Nicole Eramo, later reached a confidential settlement.)

2016 - A jury convicted two former aides to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie of causing traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge for political revenge against a Democratic mayor. (A unanimous Supreme Court tossed out the convictions in 2020.)

2020 - A day after the presidential election, victories in Michigan and Wisconsin left Joe Biden one battleground state short of winning the White House. President Donald Trump falsely claimed victory in several key states and called the election process “a major fraud on our nation”; Trump called for outstanding ballots not to be counted, and vowed to have the Supreme Court weigh in on the election. The Trump campaign said it was filing suit in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia to demand better access for campaign observers to locations where ballots were being processed and counted, and to raise absentee ballot concerns.

1899 - Cockeye defeated Nebraska 30-0.

1905 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 21-0.

1911 - Nebraska and Cockeye State played to a 6-6 tie.

1916 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 3-0.

1922 - Syracuse defeated Nebraska 9-6.

1933 - Nebraska defeated Missouri 26-0.


1934 - After posting 7 straight shutouts to start the NFL season, Detroit Lions beat Pittsburgh, 40-7 at University of Detroit Stadium; scored upon for the first time of the season; rush for NFL single game record 426 yards.

1939 - Missouri upsets #10 Nebraska 27-13.

1944 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 27-6.

1950 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 40-34.


1954 - The Philadelphia Athletics baseball franchise relocated to Kansas City.

1955 - Baseball Hall of Famer Cy Young died at age 88.

2001 - Randall Cunningham (Baltimore Ravens) achieved 30,000 career passing yards.

2001 - The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees in seven games to win their first World Series.

2003 - Mark Messier (New York Rangers) scored two goals and moved into second place in career points. The goals were points 1850 and 1851 of his career.

2006 - Nebraska defeats #25 Missouri 34-20.

2009 - The New York Yankees defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win a record 27th World Series title.

2010 - Hall of Fame baseball manager Sparky Anderson died at age 76.

2017 - Northwestern defeats Nebraska 31-24 in overtime.
