1839 - The first Opium War broke out between China and Britain.

1868 - Republican Ulysses S. Grant was elected president over Democrat Horatio Seymour.

1903 - Panama proclaimed its independence from Colombia.

1908 - Republican William Howard Taft was elected president over Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

1911 - The Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was founded in Detroit by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. (The company was acquired by General Motors in 1918.)

1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected to a second term in office in a landslide over Republican Alfred M. "Alf" Landon.

1952 - Clarence Birdseye marketed the first frozen peas.

1954 - The Japanese monster movie "Godzilla" was released by Toho Co.

1957 - The Soviet Union sent the first animal, a dog named Laika, into space aboard Sputnik II; the dog died in orbit.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy established the U.S. Agency for International Development.

1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson soundly defeated Republican challenger Barry Goldwater to win a White House term in his own right.

1979 - Five Communist Workers Party members were killed in a clash with heavily armed Ku Klux Klansmen and neo-Nazis during an anti-Klan protest in Greensboro, North Carolina.

1986 - A Lebanese magazine broke the story of U.S. arms sales to Iran, leading to the Iran-Contra affair.

1992 - Carol Moseley-Braun became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate, representing Illinois.

1992 - Democrat Bill Clinton was elected the nation's 42nd president over incumbent George H.W. Bush.

1994 - Susan Smith of Union, South Carolina was arrested for drowning her two young sons, nine days after claiming the children had been abducted. (Smith is serving life in prison.)

1997 - The U.S. Supreme Court let stand California's groundbreaking Proposition 209, which banned race and gender preferences in hiring and school admissions.

1998 - Minnesota voters elected former professional wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura as their next governor.

2004 - Hamid Karzai was declared the winner if Afghanistan's first presidential election.

2009 - Maine residents narrowly voted down a same-sex marriage law.

2010 - The Federal Reserve announced a plan to buy $600 billion in Treasury bonds over the next eight months in an attempt to boost lending and stimulate the economy.

2014 - Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, a new 1,776-foot skyscraper at the site of the World Trade Center opened for business, marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers and the nation.

2020 - Democrat Joe Biden defeated incumbent President Donald Trump to win election as the nation's 46th president; the race saw more than 103 million Americans vote early, many by mail. (Biden's victory would not be known for more than three days). Kamala Harris made history as the first woman, first Black person and first of South Asian descent to be elected vice president. Democrats also held onto control of the U.S. House, but saw their majority shrink significantly while Republicans emerged with a two-seat majority in the U.S. Senate. (The Senate control would later be erased by two Democratic wins in runoff elections in Georgia in January.)

1929 - Providence became the first NFL team to host a game at night under floodlights. The game was against the Cardinals.

1945 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 27-13.

1948 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Redwings) made the first of his record 21 All-Star appearances.

1951 - Kansas defeated Nebraska 27-7.

1953 - The Rules Committee of organized baseball restored the sacrifice fly. The rule had not been used since 1939.

1956 - Nebraska defeated Missouri 15-14.

1962 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 16-7.


1962 - Wilt Chamberlain of the San Francisco Warriors sores 72 points against the Los Angeles Lakers, then the fourth-highest single-game total in NBA history.

1973 - BYU wide receiver Jay Miller sets an NCAA single game record with 22 catches (for 263 yards) in a 56-21 win over New Mexico.

1973 - #13 Nebraska defeated #17 Colorado 28-16.

1979 - #2 Nebraska defeated Missouri 23-20.

1984 - #3 Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 44-0.


1987 - Mark McGwire of the Oakland Athletics becomes just the second player to win unanimous American League Rookie of the Year honors (Carlton Fisk, 1972).

1989 - The Minnesota Timberwolves played their inaugural NBA game, losing 106-94 to the Seattle SuperSonics.

1990 - Moses Malone of the Atlanta Hawks sets an NBA record with 7,695 career free throws made, breaking Oscar Robertson's record.

1990 - #9 Colorado upset #3 Nebraska 27-12.

1990 - TCU quarterback Matt Vogler completes 44 passes, including five touchdowns, for an NCAA record 690 passing yards in a 56-35 loss to Houston; Cougars quarterback David Klinger threw 7 TD passes in the game.

1993 - Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves became the first pitcher in MLB history to win back-to-back Cy Young Awards for different teams (Chicago Cubs in 1992).

1994 - Small forward Glenn Robinson signs the then most lucrative rookie contract in NBA history, a 10-year, $68.2 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

1996 - Jerry Rice (San Francisco 49ers) became the first NFL player to catch 1,000 career receptions.

1996 - Kobe Bryant becomes the youngest player to ever debut in the NBA, appearing for the Los Angeles Lakers at age 18 years, 2 months and 1 days.

2001 - #2 Nebraska defeated Kansas 51-7.

2001 - Arkansas defeats Mississippi 58-56 in seven overtimes, the longest game in NCAA history.

2007 - Navy defeats Notre Dame 46-44 in triple overtime, ending the Fighting Irish's NCAA record 43-game win streak over the Midshipmen; the last Navy win in the series had occurred in 1963.

2007 - #8 Kansas defeated Nebraska 76-39.

2012 - #21 Nebraska defeated Michigan State 28-24.


2013 - Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles became the seventh quarterback in NFL history with seven TD passes in a single game to lead the Eagles to a 49-20 win over the Oakland Raiders.

2018 - #8 Ohio State defeated Nebraska 36-31.
