1790 - John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States (1841-1845), was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

1848 - For the first time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing. An ice jam in the Niagara River above the rim of the falls caused the water to stop.

1861 - President Abraham Lincoln ordered plans for a relief expedition to sail to South Carolina’s Fort Sumter, which was still in the hands of Union forces despite repeated demands by the Confederacy that it be turned over.

1867 - The North American Act was passed by the British Parliament, creating the dominion of Canada.

1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered in Connecticut.

1943 - World War II rationing of meat, fats and cheese began, limiting consumers to store purchases of an average of about two pounds a week for beef, pork, lamb and mutton using a coupon system.

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were found guilty of passing atomic secrets to the Russians and were sentenced to death. (They were executed in June 1953.)

1971 - Lt. William Calley was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre. (He would spend three years under house arrest.)

1971 - A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (The sentences were later commuted.)

1973 - The last U.S. troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1974 - Eight Ohio National Guardsmen were indicted on federal charges stemming from the shooting deaths of four students at Kent State University. (The charges were later dismissed.)

1992 - Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton acknowledged experimenting with marijuana "a time or two" while attending Oxford University, adding, "I didn't inhale and I didn't try it again."

1999 - The Dow Jones Industrial average closed above 10,000 for the first time.

2002 - Israel declared Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat an enemy and sent tanks and armored personnel carriers to fully isolate him in his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

2004 - President George W. Bush welcomed seven former Soviet-bloc nations -- Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia -- into NATO during a White House ceremony.

2006 - Hamas formally took over the Palestinian government.

2010 - Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in twin attacks on Moscow subway stations jam-packed with rush-hour passengers, killing at least 40 people and wounding more than 100.

2012 - A divided House approved, 228-191, a $3.6 trillion Republican budget recasting Medicare and imposing sweeping cuts in domestic programs.

2017 - Britain filed for divorce from the European Union as Prime Minister Theresa May sent a six-page letter to EU Council President Donald Tusk.

2021 - The former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd went on trial with prosecutors showing the jury video of Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on the Black man’s neck for several minutes as onlookers yelled at him repeatedly to get off and Floyd gasped that he couldn’t breathe. (Chauvin would be convicted of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.)

2021 - Salvage teams dislodged a huge container ship that had blocked the Suez Canal for six days.

1929 - The first NHL Stanley Cup Final between two U.S.-based teams took place. The Boston Bruins beat the New York Rangers to get their first Stanley Cup title.

1941 - Wisconsin defeated Washington State 39-34 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1970 - Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded his 15th shutout. It was an NHL record for rookie goalies and the most shut outs in the modern era.

1976 - Indiana defeats Michigan 86-68 to win the NCAA Tournament; it was the first time two teams from the same conference had met in a national championship game.

1982 - North Carolina defeats Georgetown 63-62 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1984 - Under the cover of early morning darkness, the Baltimore Colts football franchise left its home city of three decades and moved to Indianapolis.

1985 - Wayne Gretzky breaks his own NHL single-season record with his 126th assist.

1987 - Tennessee routs Louisiana Tech 67-44 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1987 - Hulk Hogan slammed Andre the Giant in the main event of WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit in front of more than 93,000 fans.

1998 - Tennessee defeated Louisiana Tech 93-75 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament and ended the season with a perfect 39-0 record, a new NCAA record.

1999 - Wayne Gretzky of the New York Rangers scored the last of his National Hockey League record 894 goals in a home game against the New York Islanders; Gretzky also finished with 1,072 professional goals scored (WHA and NHL combined), surpassing the 1,071 scored by Gordie Howe.

1999 - Connecticut defeats Duke 77-74 to win the NCAA Tournament.
