1812 - An earthquake devastated Caracas, Venezuela, causing an estimated 26,000 deaths.

1827 - Composer Ludwig van Beethoven died at age 56 in Vienna, Austria.

1945 - The World War II Battle of Iwo Jima ended; about 22,000 Japanese troops were killed or captured in the fighting and more than 4,500 American troops were killed.

1962 - The U.S. Supreme Court in Baker v. Carr, gave federal courts the power to order reapportionment of states' legislative districts.

1971 - East Pakistan proclaimed its independence and changed its name to Bangladesh.

1973 - The soap opera "The Young and the Restless" premiered on CBS.

1979 - In a ceremony at the White House, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel signed a peace treaty ending 30 years of war between the two countries.

1982 - Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial took place in Washington, D.C.

1988 - Jesse Jackson stunned fellow Democrats by soundly defeating Michael S. Dukakis in Michigan’s Democratic presidential caucuses.

1997 - The bodies of 39 members of the Heaven's Gate techno-religious cult who committed suicide were found inside a rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

2000 - Vladimir Putin is elected president of Russia.

2010 - The U.S. and Russia sealed the first major nuclear weapons treaty in nearly two decades, agreeing to slash the former Cold War rivals' warhead arsenals by nearly one-third.

2013 - Italy's top criminal court overturned the acquittal of American Amanda Knox in the grisly murder of British roommate Meredith Kercher and ordered Knox to stand trial again. (Although convicted in absentia, Knox was exonerated by the Italian Supreme Court in 2015.)

2014 - Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, Sulaiman Abi Ghaith, was convicted in New York for his role as al-Qaeda's fiery chief spokesman after 9/11. (He was later sentenced to life in prison.)

2018 - A toxicology report obtained by The Associated Press revealed that the late pop superstar Prince had levels of fentanyl in his body that multiple experts described as "exceedingly high."

2020 - The U.S. surpassed official Chinese government numbers to become the country with the most reported coronavirus infections.

2021 - Dominion Voting Systems filed a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News, saying the cable news giant falsely claimed that the voting company rigged the 2020 presidential election.

2022 - President Joe Biden said in Poland that Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power," dramatically escalating the rhetoric against the Russian leader after his brutal invasion of Ukraine.

2023 - Ukraine's government called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to "counter the Kremlin's nuclear blackmail" after Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed plans to station tactical atomic weapons in Belarus.

1931 - Boston Bruins coach Art Ross became the first NHL coach to pull his goalie for an extra attacker. The Bruins lost to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals.

1949 - Kentucky defeats Oklahoma State 46-36 to win a second consecutive NCAA Tournament.

1952 - Kansas defeats St. John's 80-63 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers set an NBA record when they won their 69th game of the season.

1973 - UCLA defeats Memphis 81-76 to win a seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament.

1974 - George Foreman records a TKO over Ken Norton in the second round for the WBA, WBC and The Ring heavyweight boxing titles in Caracas, Venezuela.

1979 - Michigan State defeats Indiana State 75-64 to win the NCAA Tournament; the game marked the start of the rivalry between future Hall of Famers Magic Johnson and Larry Bird and was the highest-rated game in the history of televised college basketball.

1992 - The New York Rangers clinch their first regular season NHL championship in 50 years.

1992 - A judge in Indianapolis sentenced former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to six years in prison for raping a Miss Black America contestant. (Tyson ended up serving three years.)

2014 - The National Labor Relations Board ruled that college football players at Northwestern University could unionize.
