1790 - John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, was born in Charles City, Virginia.

1848 - For the first time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing as an ice jam in the Niagara River above the rim of the falls caused the water to stop.

1861 - President Abraham Lincoln ordered plans for a relief expedition to sail to South Carolina’s Fort Sumter, which was still in the hands of Union forces despite repeated demands by the Confederacy that it be turned over.

1867 - The North America Act was passed by the British Parliament, creating the dominion of Canada.

1943 - World War II rationing of meat, fats and cheese began, limiting consumers to store purchases of an average of about two pounds a week for beef, pork, lamb and mutton using a coupon system.

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were found guilty of passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union and were sentenced to death. (They would be executed in June 1953.)

1971 - Lt. William Calley was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. (Calley ended up serving three years under house arrest.)

1971 - A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (The sentences were commuted when the California state Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in 1972.)

1973 - The last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1974 - Eight Ohio National Guardsmen were indicted on federal charges stemming from the shooting deaths of four students at Kent State University. (The charges were later dismissed.)

1999 - The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 10,000 for the first time, at 10,006.78.

2004 - President George W. Bush welcomed seven former Soviet-bloc nations (Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) into NATO during a White House ceremony.

2002 - Israeli troops stormed Yasser Arafat’s headquarters complex in the West Bank in a raid that was launched in response to anti-Israeli attacks that had killed 30 people in three days.

2010 - Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in twin attacks on Moscow subway stations jam-packed with rush-hour passengers, killing at least 40 people and wounding more than 100.

2013 - President Barack Obama promoted a plan to create construction and other jobs by attracting private money to help rebuild roads, bridges and other public works projects during a visit to a Miami port that was undergoing $2 billion in upgrades paid for with government and private dollars.

2018 - Russia announced the expulsion of more than 150 diplomats, including 60 Americans, and said it was closing a U.S. consulate in retaliation for Western expulsions of Russian diplomats over the poisoning of an ex-spy and his daughter in Britain.

2022 - President Joe Biden signed a bill into law making lynching a federal hate crime, more than 100 years after such legislation was first proposed.

1929 - The first NHL Stanley Cup Final between two U.S.-based teams took place. The Boston Bruins beat the New York Rangers to get their first Stanley Cup title.

1941 - Wisconsin defeats Washington State 39-34 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1970 - Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded his 15th shutout. It was an NHL record for rookie goalies and the most shut outs in the modern era.

1973 - Bobby Clarke (Philadelphia Flyers) became the first NHL player from a post-'67 expansion team to score 100 points in a season.

1976 - Indiana defeats Michigan 86-68 to win the NCAA Tournament; it marked the first time two teams from the same conference played in the championship final.

1982 - North Carolina defeats Georgetown 63-62 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1984 - Under the cover of early morning darkness, the Baltimore Colts football team left its home city of more than three decades and moved to Indianapolis.

1987 - Tennessee defeats Louisiana Tech 67-44 to win the NCAA women's tournament.

1987 - WrestleMania III is held before a record 93,173 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome near Detroit; the main event featured Hulk Hogan defeating Andre the Giant for the WWF championship.

1998 - Tennessee defeated Louisiana Tech 93-75 to win the NCAA women's tournament for the third consecutive year and ended the season with a perfect 39-0 record.

1998 - WrestleMania XIV is held in Boston; the main event saw Stone Cold Steve Austin defeat Shawn Michaels for the WWF championship in a match that featured heavyweight boxing star Mike Tyson as an "outside enforcer."

1999 - Wayne Gretzky (New York Rangers) scored his 1,072nd professional goal (WHA and NHL combined) passing Gordie Howe who had scored 1,071.

1999 - Connecticut defeats Duke 77-74 to win their first NCAA Tournament.

2004 - Steve Moore (Colorado Avalanche) spoke to the media for the first time since Todd Bertuzzi (Vancouver Canucks) sucker-punched him during a game on March 9.

2013 - Jaromir Jagr of the Dallas Stars scored is 1,000th assist in a game against the Minnesota Wild. He was the 12th NHL player to reach 1,000 points and the first non-Canadian NHL player to reach the mark.

2015 - WrestleMania 31 is held in Santa Clara, California; the main event saw Seth Rollins defeating Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
