1781 - The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation.

1790 - The U.S. Congress authorized the first census.

1803 - Ohio became the 17th state.

1845 - President John Tyler signed a congressional resolution to annex the Republic of Texas.

1864 - Rebecca Lee became the first black woman awarded a medical degree.

1867 - Nebraska became the 37th state.

1872 - Yellowstone became the world's first National Park.

1893 - Inventor Nikola Tesla first publicly demonstrated radio during a meeting of the National Electric Light Association in St. Louis by transmitting electromagnetic energy without wires.

1932 - The 20-month-old son of Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped.

1954 - Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire from the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, wounding five congressmen.

1957 - "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss was released to bookstores by Random House.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps.

1966 - The Soviet space probe Venera 3 impacted the surface of Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to reach another planet; however, Venera was unable to transmit any data, its communications system having failed.

1968 - Country musicians Johnny Cash and June Carter were married.

1971 - A bomb went off inside a men’s room at the U.S. Capitol; the radical group Weather Underground claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn blast.

1974 - Former Nixon White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman and former Attorney General John Mitchell were indicted on obstruction of justice charges related to the Watergate break-in.

1981 - IRA member Bobby Sands began a hunger strike in Maze Prison; he would die 65 days later.

2003 - Suspected Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was captured by CIA and Pakistani agents near Islamabad.

2005 - BTK serial killer Dennis Rader was charged in Wichita, Kansas, with 10 counts of first-degree murder. (He later pleaded guilty and received multiple life sentences.)

2005 - A closely divided Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty for juvenile criminals.

2010 - Jay Leno returned as host of NBC's "The Tonight Show".

2011 - The GOP-controlled House handily passed legislation to cut the federal budget by $4 billion and avert a partial shutdown of the government for two weeks. (The Senate passed the stopgap funding bill the next day.)

2012 - Online publisher and conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart died in Los Angeles at age 43.

2016 - In the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses, Republican Donald Trump won Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia; Ted Cruz won Alaska, Oklahoma and his home state of Texas; Marco Rubio won Minnesota. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton won Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia while Bernie Sanders prevailed in Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma and his home state of Vermont.

1941 - Elmer Layden was named the first Commissioner of the NFL.

1949 - Joe Louis announced that he was retiring from boxing as world heavyweight boxing champion with a career record of 66-3 with 52 KO; he had defended the heavyweight championship a record 25 times.

1969 - Mickey Mantle announced his retirement from baseball.

1970 - Minnesota coach Charlie Burns becomes the final player/coach in NHL history, when he plays in the North Stars' 8-0 win over Toronto Maple Leafs; remains in role for final month of the season.

1979 - The NCAA granted ESPN the exclusive rights to broadcast collegiate events.

1981 - Houston Rockets guard Calvin Murphy misses a free throw in a 102-86 loss in San Antonio, ending his NBA record consecutive free throw streak at 78.

1988 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) got his 1,050th assist to become the NHL's all-time assist leader. Gordie Howe had held the record for 26 years.

1993 - The expansion NHL team owned by Disney was named the Mighty Ducks, inspired by the 1992 Disney movie, "The Mighty Ducks".

1996 - Lenny Wilkens of the Atlanta Hawks won his 1,000th NBA game as a head coach.

1996 - The Dallas Mavericks set a record when they attempted 44 3-point shots in a game against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

1997 - Puerto Rican boxer Hector Camacho stops Sugar Ray Leonard in the 5th round in Atlantic City, New Jersey to retain the IBC middleweight title; it was the only time in Leonard's career that he had been knocked out, and afterwards goes into permanent retirement.

1998 - Miami's Pat Riley becomes the 5th head coach to record 900 NBA career wins with Heat's 85-84 win over the New Jersey Nets.

2003 - World light heavyweight boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. wins a unanimous decision against champion John Ruiz to capture the WBA heavyweight crown in Las Vegas.

2003 - Legendary Mount St. Mary's basketball head coach Jim Phelan wins final game of 49 year career as Mountaineers win 60-56 over Central Connecticut State; Phelan: 830 wins in NCAA record 1,354 games.

2016 - MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred sends a strong message on the issue of domestic violence; issues a 30-game suspension to NY Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.

2005 - The NHL's board of governors met and emerged fully behind Commissioner Gary Bettman and totally committed to having a season in the fall.
