814 - Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne died in Aachen in present-day Germany.

1547 - King Henry VIII of England died and his nine-year-old son, Edward VI, assumed the throne.

1813 - The novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen was first published anonymously in London.

1871 - France surrendered in the Franco-Prussian War.

1909 - The United States ended direct control over Cuba.

1911 - The notorious Hope Diamond was sold by jeweler Pierre Cartier to socialites Edward and Evalyn McLean of Washington, D.C. for $180,000.

1915 - Congress passed legislation creating the U.S. Coast Guard.

1915 - The American merchant vessel SS William P. Frye, en route to England with a cargo of wheat, became the first U.S. ship to be sunk during World War I by a German cruiser, the SS Prinz Eitel Friedrich, even though the United States was not at war.

1916 - The first Jewish member of the United States Supreme Court, Louis Brandeis, was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson.

1945 - During World War II, Allied supplies began reaching China over the newly reopened Burma Road.

1956 - Elvis Presley made his first national TV appearance on “Stage Show,” a CBS program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.

1986 - The space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, killing all seven crew members on board, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

1999 - Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, honoring a personal request for mercy from Pope John Paul II, spared a triple murderer from execution.

1999 - The creation of Element 114 is announced by scientists.

2003 - President George W. Bush said in his State of the Union address that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had sought uranium from Africa. (The claim was later disputed by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had been asked by the CIA to investigate.)

2011 - The nation's largest cable TV company, Comcast Corp., took control of NBC Universal, capping a 13-month bid.

2016 - With Donald Trump absent because of a feud with Fox News Channel, the other Republican presidential candidates strained to take advantage of a rare opportunity to step out of the front-runner’s shadow during a debate in Des Moines, Cockeye.

2020 - The United States and several other nations prepared to airlift citizens out of the Chinese city at the center of a virus outbreak that had killed more than 100 people.

2020 - With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu standing beside him at the White House, President Donald Trump unveiled his long-awaited Middle East plan, one that strongly favored Israel; it called for the eventual creation of a Palestinian state but would leave sizable chunks of the occupied West Bank in Israeli hands. Palestinians reacted angrily to the plan.

2020 - Lawyers for President Donald Trump finished making their case for a speedy acquittal at his Senate impeachment trial.

1904 - The University of Chicago awarded blankets with the letter C to all seniors that played football during the 1903 season. This event marked the beginning of the sports letter tradition.

1922 - The National Football League franchise in Decatur, IL, transferred to Chicago. The team took the name Chicago Bears.

1959 - Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

1960 - The NFL announces new franchises: the Dallas Cowboys (1960) and the Minnesota Vikings (1961).

1968 - Goose Goslin and Kiki Cuyler are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1969 - The Buffalo Bills select USC running back O.J. Simpson with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1971 - The New England Patriots select Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1975 - The Atlanta Falcons select California quarterback Steve Bartkowski with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in New Orleans to win Super Bowl XXIV. San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana is named MVP.

1996 - The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Tempe to win Super Bowl XXX, the fifth Super Bowl title for the franchise. Dallas cornerback Larry Brown is named MVP.

2001 - The Baltimore Ravens defeat the New York Giants 34-7 in Tampa to win Super Bowl XXXV. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis is named MVP.

2003 - The WNBA announced that Connecticut had been awarded a franchise for the 2003 season. The team, the Connecticut Sun, was the first WNBA team to be owned by a non-NBA owner (the Mohegan Sun).

2017 - Serena Williams defeats her sister Venus to win her seventh Australian Open title and a record 23rd Grand Slam singles championship.
