1492 - Muhammad XI, the leader of the last Arab stronghold in Spain, surrendered to King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I.

1788 - Georgia became the fourth state.

1811 - Sen. Timothy Pickering, a Federalist from Massachusetts, became the first member of the U.S. Senate to be censured after he'd improperly revealed the contests of an executive document.

1839 - Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre took the first photograph of the Moon.

1905 - The Russo-Japanese War ended.

1921 - Religious services were broadcast on radio for the first time as KDKA in Pittsburgh aired the regular Sunday service of the city's Calvary Episcopal Church.

1923 - The African-American town of Rosewood, Florida was burned by a white mob.

1935 - The Bruno R. Hauptmann trial began for the kidnap and murder of the Lindbergh baby.

1959 - The first spacecraft to fly by the Moon and also to orbit the Sun, Mechta (Luna 1), was launched by the Soviet Union.

1960 - Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts launched his successful bid for the presidency.

1967 - Republican Ronald Reagan took the oath of office as the new governor of California in a ceremony that took place in Sacramento shortly after midnight.

1974 - President Richard Nixon signed legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 miles per hour as a way of conserving gasoline in the face of an OPEC oil embargo. (The 55 mph limit was effectively phased out in 1987; federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.)

1981 - Police in Sheffield, England arrested Peter Sutcliffe, who confessed to being the "Yorkshire Ripper," the serial killer of 13 women.

1983 - The original Broadway production of the musical "Annie" closed after a run of 2,377 performances.

1994 - Rudolph Giuliani is inaugurated as mayor of New York City.

2006 - A methane gas explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia trapped 13 miners underground for more than 40 hours; only one survived.

2007 - The state funeral of former President Gerald R. Ford began with an elaborate service at Washington National Cathedral, then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

2008 - The price of oil reached $100 a barrel for the first time.

2010 - A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook southern Chile, sending tens of thousands of people fearing a tsunami to higher ground.

2015 - California began issuing driver's licenses to immigrants who were in the country illegally.

2016 - A heavily armed group led by Ammon and Ryan Bundy seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, beginning a 41-day standoff to protest the imprisonment of two ranchers convicted of setting fires on public land and to demand the federal government turn over public lands to local control.

2018 - Sen. Al Franken formally resigned from the Senate a month after the Minnesota Democrat announced his plan to leave Congress amid a series of sexual misconduct allegations.

2018 - NBC News announced that Hoda Kotb would be the co-anchor of the first two hours of the "Today" show, replacing Matt Lauer following his firing due to sexual misconduct allegations.

2020 - The Trump administration announced that it would begin cracking down on most flavored e-cigarettes that were popular with underage teenagers; the plan included exceptions benefitting vaping manufacturers, retailers and adults who used the nicotine-delivery devices.

1943 - The University of Kentucky men's basketball team began a 129 game home winning streak that would last until 1955.

1953 - The Baltimore Bullets began a 32-game NBA road losing streak.

1965 - Joe Namath signed the richest rookie contract to date in the history of professional football at three years for $427,000.

1966 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the Cleveland Browns 23-12 to win the NFL championship game, the last championship before the Super Bowl era.

1967 - #3 Alabama defeats #6 Nebraska 34-7 in the Sugar Bowl. NU ends the season at 9-2 and ranked #6 (AP) and #7 (UPI) in the final polls.

1971 - In Glasgow, Scotland, 66 people were crushed when fans trying to leave encountered fans trying to return after hearing that a late goal had been scored.

1972 - Elvis Presley gave Muhammad Ali a $10,000 robe with the words "People's Champion" inscribed on it. Ali wore the robe on March 31, 1973 when he lost to Ken Norton.

1977 - MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspends Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner for one year due to tampering charges in Gary Matthews free-agency signing.

1983 - Ken Anderson of the Cincinnati Bengals completed 20 consecutive passes in a game against the Houston Oilers to set an NFL record for passing accuracy.

1984 - #5 Miami (FL) defeats #1 Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl. NU ends the season with a 12-1 record and ranked #2 in the final polls.

1985 - UNLV defeated Utah State 142-140 in triple overtime to set a new NCAA record for total points scored in a NCAA basketball game (282). The game also gave UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian his 600th career win.

1986 - Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders scored his 500th career goal.

1987 - Indiana Pacers beat the Los Angeles Clippers, 116-106 to give coach Jack Ramsay his 800th NBA victory; at the time Ramsey is one of only 2 coaches (with Red Auerbach) to reach milestone.

1989 - #2 Miami (FL) defeats #6 Nebraska 23-3 in the Orange Bowl. NU ends the year at 11-2 and ranked #10 in the final polls.

1996 - #1 Nebraska defeats #2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl to win a second consecutive national championship and the fourth in program history. NU ends the season with a 12-0 record and ranked #1 in the final polls.

1998 - #2 Nebraska defeats #3 Tennessee 42-17 to win the Orange Bowl and the fifth national championship in program history. NU ends the season with a 13-0 record and ranked #1 in the final Coaches Poll and #2 in the final AP Poll.

2000 - #3 Nebraska defeats #6 Tennessee 31-21 to win the Fiesta Bowl. NU ends the season with a 12-1 record and ranked #2 (Coaches) and #3 (AP) in the final polls.


2002 - Mike Modano (Dallas Stars) scored his 400th career NHL goal. Modano became only the fourth United States-born player to reach 400 goals.

2002 - Ron Francis (Carolina Hurricanes) scored his 500th career NHL goal. Francis became only the fifth player in NHL history to reach 500 goals and 1,000 assists.

2012 - #10 South Carolina defeats #21 Nebraska 30-13 in the Capital One Bowl. NU ends the year with a 9-4 record and ranked #24 in the final polls.
