1808 - A law prohibiting the importation of slaves into the United States, went into effect.

1863 - Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that slaves in rebel states shall be "forever free".

1892 - The Ellis Island Immigrant Station in New York opened.

1895 - J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, was born.

1898 - New York City was consolidated into five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

1901 - The Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed.

1908 - The ball signifying the New Year was dropped for the first time at Times Square in New York City.

1914 - The world's first airline, St. Petersburg Tampa Airboat Line, started operation in St. Petersburg, Florida.

1953 - Country singer Hank Williams Sr. died of a drug and alcohol overdose at age 29.

1954 - NBC broadcast the first coast-to-coast color TV program as it presented live coverage of the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

1959 - Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries took over Cuba and toppled Fulgencio Batista's regime.

1975 - John Mitchell, H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman were convicted of obstruction of justice in the Watergate affair.

1979 - The United States and China established diplomatic relations.

1984 - AT&T was divested of its 22 Bell System companies under terms of an antitrust agreement.

1992 - Boutros Boutros-Ghali succeeded Javier Perez de Cuellar as secretary-general of the United Nations.

1993 - Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

1994 - The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect.

1935 - The first Sugar Bowl was played, Tulane defeated Temple 20-14.

1935 - The first Sun Bowl was played, Hardin Simmons and New Mexico State played to a 14-14 tie.

1937 - The first Cotton Bowl was played, TCU defeated Marquette 16-6.

1941 - #2 Stanford defeated #7 Nebraska 21-13 in the Rose Bowl. NU ends the season at 8-2 and ranked #7.

2017 - In the College Football Playoff, semifinals, #4 Alabama defeated #1 Clemson 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl, while #3 Georgia defeated #2 Oklahoma 54-48 in double overtime in the Rose Bowl.

2019 - Former NBA commissioner David Stern died at age 77, three weeks after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
