1756 - Aaron Burr, America's third vice president, was born in Newark, New Jersey.

1778 - During the American Revolutionary War, the United States won official recognition and military support from France with the signing of a Treaty of Alliance in Paris.

1788 - Massachusetts became the sixth state.

1815 - The state of New Jersey issued the first American railroad charter to John Stevens, who proposed a rail link between Trenton and New Brunswick. (The line, however, was never built.)

1862 - During the Civil War, Fort Henry in Tennessee fell to Union forces.

1899 - The Spanish-American War ended when a peace treaty between the United States and Spain was signed.

1911 - Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, was born in Tampico, Illinois.

1922 - Cardinal Archille Ratti was elected pope and took the name Pius XI.

1933 - The 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which moved the start of presidential, vice presidential and congressional terms from March to January, was declared in effect.

1935 - The popular board game "Monopoly" went on sale for the first time.

1952 - Britain’s King George VI died at Sandringham House in Norfolk, England at age 56; he was succeeded as monarch by his 25-year-old elder daughter Princess Elizabeth, who became Queen Elizabeth II.

1971 - Astronaut Alan B. Shepard hit a golf ball and Edgar Mitchell threw a "javelin" on the surface of the moon. They landed in the same crater and remain their today.

1998 - President Bill Clinton signed a bill changing the name of Washington National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

2000 - First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in New York.

2001 - Ariel Sharon was elected prime minister of Israel.

2003 - Edging closer to war, President George W. Bush declared “the game is over” for Saddam Hussein and urged skeptical allies to join in disarming Iraq.

2004 - An explosion ripped through a Moscow subway car during rush hour, killing 41 people in a terrorist attack blamed on Chechen separatists.

2012 - The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II marked her 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

2020 - A 57-year-old woman died in California’s Santa Clara County; autopsy results would later reveal that the woman, identified by family members as Patricia Dowd of San Jose, had the coronavirus, despite not having traveled outside the country to a coronavirus outbreak area. (The death came some three weeks before health officials in the Seattle area announced what were believed then to be the first U.S. deaths from the virus.) A Chinese doctor, Li Wenliang, who got in trouble with authorities there for sounding an early warning about the coronavirus outbreak, died after coming down with the illness.

1895 - Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore.

1926 - The National Football League adopted a rule that made players ineligible for competition until their college class graduated.

1958 - Ted Williams signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox that was worth $135,000. The contract made him the highest paid player in major league history.

1970 - The NBA expanded to 18 teams for the 1970-71 season. The new teams added were Buffalo, Cleveland, Houston and Portland.

1990 - Brett Hull (St. Louis Blues) and his father Bobby Hull, became the only father-son combination in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season.

1993 - Tennis Hall of Famer Arthur Ashe, who had contracted HIV through a tainted blood transfusion, died at age 49.

2005 - The New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Jacksonville to win Super Bowl XXXIX, their third championship in four years; New England wide receiver Deion Branch is named MVP.

2011 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Arlington to win Super Bowl XLV; Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is named MVP.

2011 - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady became the first unanimous choice for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award.

2016 - Brett Favre, Ken Stabler, Marvin Harrison, Kevin Greene, Orlando Pace and Tony Dungy were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2016 - Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers won The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.
