336 - The first known commemoration of a Christmas celebration on December 25th took place in Rome.

1066 - William the Conqueror was crowned King of England.

1776 - Gen. George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River and surprised the Hessians at Trenton, New Jersey during the Revolutionary War.

1818 - "Silent Night" was publicly performed for the first time during the Christmas Midnight Mass at the Church of St. Nikolaus in Oberndorf, Austria.

1868 - President Andrew Johnson granted an unconditional pardon to all persons involved in the Southern rebellion that resulted in the Civil War.

1926 - Hirohito became emperor of Japan, succeeding his father, Yoshihito.

1977 - British film actor, director and producer Charlie Chaplin died in Switzerland at age 88.

1989 - Former Romanian president Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena, were executed.

1991 - Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev went on television to announce his resignation as the eighth and final leader of a communist superpower that had already gone out of existence.

1999 - Space Shuttle Discovery’s astronauts finished their repair job on the Hubble Space Telescope and released it back into orbit.

2003 - Sixteen people were killed by mudslides that swept over campgrounds in California’s San Bernardino Valley.

2009 - Passengers aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 foiled an attempt to blow up the plane as it was landing in Detroit by seizing Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who tried to set off explosives in his underwear. (Abdulmutallab later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.)

2012 - Chicago mobster Frank Calabrese Sr. died in a federal prison in North Carolina at age 75.

2021 - NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s largest and most powerful space telescope, rocketed away from French Guiana in South America on a quest to see light from the first stars and galaxies and search the universe for signs of life.

2020 - A recreational vehicle parked in the deserted streets of downtown Nashville exploded early Christmas morning, damaging dozens of buildings, causing widespread communications outages and grounding holiday travel at the city’s airport; investigators later determined that the bomber, a 63-year-old Nashville-area man, was killed in the explosion.

1894 - The University of Chicago became the first Midwestern football team to play on the west coast. Chicago defeated Stanford, 24-4, in Palo Alto, California.

1914 - During World War I, British and German troops observed an unofficial truce and even played football together on the Western Front.

1971 - he longest pro-football game to date finally ended when Garo Yepremian kicked a field goal in the second quarter of sudden death overtime. The Miami Dolphins defeated Kansas City, 27-24. The total game time was 82 minutes and 40 seconds.

1995 - Emmitt Johnson of the Dallas Cowboys set an NFL record by scoring his 25th touchdown of the season in a 37-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

2008 - Phil Jackson became the sixth coach in NBA history to achieve 1,000 career wins after leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 92-83 win over the Boston Celtics.

2020 - New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara ties Ernie Nevers' 1929 NFL record of six touchdowns in a game in the Saints' 52-33 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
