1616 - Playwright William Shakespeare died in Stratford-on-Avon, England, at the age of 52.

1616 - The Spanish poet Cervantes died in Madrid.

1789 - President-elect George Washington and his wife Martha moved into the first executive mansion, the Franklin House, in New York City.

1791 - James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

1898 - Spain declared war on the United States, which responded in kind two days later.

1940 - About 200 people died in a dance-hall fire in Natchez, Mississippi.

1943 - U.S. Navy Lieutenant John F. Kennedy assumed command of PT-109, a motor torpedo boat, in the Solomon Islands during World War II. (On Aug. 2, 1943, PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer, killing two crew members; Kennedy and 10 others survived.)

1968 - More than 300 Columbia University students barricaded the office of the college dean, charging the university with supporting the Vietnam War and violating Harlem residents’ civil rights.

1969 - Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death (later reduced to a life sentence) for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

1985 - Coca-Cola announced it was changing its iconic soft drink formula and introduced "New Coke". (Overwhelming negative public reaction forced the company to revert back to its original formula and reintroduce "Coca-Cola Classic.")

1987 - Twenty-eight construction workers were killed when an apartment complex being built in Bridgeport, Connecticut, suddenly collapsed.

1988 - A federal ban on smoking during domestic airline flights of two hours or less went into effect.

1993 - Labor leader Cesar Chavez died in San Luis, Arizona, at age 66.

1996 - A civil court jury in The Bronx, New York, ordered Bernhard Goetz to pay $43 million to Darrell Cabey, one of four young men he’d shot on a subway car in 1984.

1998 - James Earl Ray, who confessed to assassinating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and then insisted he had been framed, died in Nashville, Tennessee at age 70.

2004 - The United States resumed diplomatic relations with Libya.

2005 - Co-founder Jawed Karim uploaded the first video to YouTube.com.

2007 - Boris Yeltsin, the first freely-elected president of Russia, died at age 76.

2010 - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the nation's toughest illegal immigration measure into law.

2016 - Britain marked the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare with parades, church services and stage performances; President Barack Obama took a break from political talks in London to tour the Globe Theatre, a re-creation of the venue where many of the Bard’s plays were first performed.

2020 - At a White House briefing, President Donald Trump noted that researchers were looking at the effects of disinfectants on the coronavirus, and wondered aloud whether they could be injected into people.

1914 - In Chicago, IL, the first major league game at Wrigley Field took place. The Federals defeated Kansas City 9-1.

1950 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeated the Syracuse Nationals in six games to win the first NBA championship.

1950 - The Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup.

1954 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his 755 career home runs.

1962 - After beginning the season with nine straight losses, the New York Mets win their first game in franchise history, a 9-1 decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1964 - Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played his last regular season game in the NBA.

1989 - The Dallas Cowboys select UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1989 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1989 NFL Draft: LB - Broderick Thomas (1st round, 6th pick, Tampa Bay Buccaneers); DT - Lawrence Pete (5th round, Detroit Lions); WR - Dana Brinson (8th round, San Diego Chargers); DB - Tim Jackson (9th round, Dallas Cowboys); TE - Todd Millikan (10th round, Chicago Bears); DE - Willie Griffin (11th round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers); and QB - Steve Taylor (12th round, Indianapolis Colts).

2002 - Brent Johson (St. Louis Blues) became the first NHL goalie to win his first 3 wins in the playoffs by shutout. He was only the fourth goalie to record three straight NHL playoff shutouts.

2005 - The San Francisco 49ers select Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2005 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2005 NFL Draft: CB - Fabian Washington (1st round, 23rd pick, Oakland Raiders); LB - Barrett Ruud (2nd round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers); S - Josh Bullocks (2nd round, New Orleans Saints); and C - Richie Incognito (3rd round, St. Louis Rams).

2020 - The Cincinnati Bengals selected LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2020 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft: DT - Khalil Davis (6th round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers); and DT - Carlos Davis (7th round, Pittsburgh Steelers).
