Frost talks kicking game, limiting Bell and RBs
ByMICHAEL BRUNTZ 3 hours agoFrost said he thought the bye week did his team well, and that includes the kicking spot, where Nebraska has largely rolled with senior Connor Culp, who has struggled this season. Culp enters Purdue week 6-for-12 on field goal attempts, with four of his misses coming inside 40 yards. Culp has also missed four extra points this season.
In addition to Culp, freshman Kelen Meyer has seen the field this season. Fellow freshman Brendan Franke has handled the kickoff responsibilities.
“We had a kick off with four guys, and all four guys did pretty well,” Frost said. “We have a decision to make, but I think stepping away sometimes helps if you're in a little bit of a rut or going through something in your mind, so it probably did some good to get a week off.”
As for the rest of the team, Frost said he thought the bye week was helpful for getting his team healthy and refocused for the final four games of the regular season.
“I'm glad we got a bye week,” Frost said. The kids needed a little bit of rest and seen another spring in their step. That being said, it's great being back around the guys this week. They prepared well all year, so just excited to get back out there with again. I think they're hungry to play.”
Notes:
— Frost confirmed that running back Rahmir Johnson has cleared concussion protocol and is good to go Saturday against the Boilermakers. How things will shake out behind Johnson is still up in the air, Frost said.
“Rahmir is ready to go and we’ll kind of play it by ear after that,” Frost said. “Usually we go with the hot hand or who practiced best.”
— Frost said the key to trying to limit Purdue wide receiver David Bell is cutting down on big plays to the talented wideout. Bell has 44 catches for 712 yard and four touchdowns this season.
“You know that he's gonna get his balls,” Frost said. “I think just trying to limit big plays is the key. I don't think you're ever gonna take a guy like that completely out of the game. We just got to try to do our best to limit explosives.”
