The Cleveland Indians are now the .................

Guardians is just a bad name.

Spiders would have been pretty good.
I agree. With Cleveland being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you'd think they'd come up with something related to that. If they picked the right name, it could be a marketing bonanza with a lot of cross promotion possibilities.

How long before the Chiefs bend the knee?

I say < 2 years.
I've really not heard much noise around the Chiefs.... I've seen some minor noise around the Braves. KC better be lining up various tribal representatives to go to bat for them. That is how FSU has survived.

I'd like to see the fallout / support matrix of an organization just flat out refusing to change.... I mean taking an extreme hard line. The Redskins tried early, but I can actually see how their name could be offensive to some. I still think they should have kept it but I'm probably in the minority there. Team nicknames are meant to be an honor... That's why Jackasses and Assholes are still available.

They shouldn't have changed but Spiders was the best alternative. I read where Cleveland ownership was worried about licensing issues with the Richmond Spiders... I would have thought that could have been overcome. I would wager the Guardians nickname may cost them more in the long run in lost merchandising than acquiring the rights to Spiders from a small liberal arts school.

I don't get why people are so mad about this.
I would consider myself more irritated than mad, but I'm just tired of PC culture in general. It is a snowball rolling downhill that is not stopping. 100 years of history is being needlessly thrown to the curb because of potential hurt feelings and feel good-ism and that should not be acceptable.... It's not the American way. Wokeness will eventually impact something you care about. I care about baseball... I guess I'll consider myself lucky I'm not an Indians fan.

That was 'Bama in the '60s in their away uniforms. All whites in all whites.

The name sucks but I mean...roller derby team? If I were them I wouldn't have said anything and did some generic advertising like

Come watch the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night at... see how many tickets you could sell before people realized it was roller derby.

I'd just sell the name for a one time cash pay out of $250k or whatever to fund my roller derby shit for the next decade.
