Need a little bit of advice/guidance. Don't have any tattoos. My wife's side job's connection is opening a tattoo shop in Papillion here soon. She's going to get scheduled for one once they open up. I've had the intention of getting something to honor my dog that passed in May, that I had a full on thread about at the time. Life just seems to keep getting in the way of pulling the trigger. I'd like to eventually get something of my daughter and wife as well, but honestly something to honor my dog has been at the top of the tattoo list for me.

I'd like to do something significant with like a portrait type deal. I know the picture I want, just don't have any experience with how those usually turn out. My wife advised a standard paw print with some writing, but it's way too important to me than just a standard one.

Anyone have any experience with these kinds of tattoos and how they usually turn out?

To give some context, it's a picture of him in the backyard about a year-ish ago, one of the lasts photos where he looked healthy and overall happy. It would certainly be a detailed tattoo. Thinking upper arm as I don't want it to be a big deal at work.

That's not my department. Never thought of one and more than likely never will. The wife on the other hand is an expert.

I have a sleeve, but one of my latest tattoos I had chat GPT come up with a design. Actually was pretty awesome. Just make sure you research the artists work especially if you are going to have a detailed image you want. Zoom in and look at their lines.

Is there anything online that will let me plug in the picture and where I want it and it will show me?

no regrets GIF

what kind of dog? or better yet what color? My brother does tatts in Idaho and has been for decades. People come in and want a black lab tatt...he says no b/c it would look like a black blob. Like others have said, check the artist's work and line work especially

He was technically a yellow lab, but it was more of a whiter coat then yellow

My advice- get the artist to put whatever you think you want on canvas and hang it up in your house. That way you can throw it away when you get sick of looking at it.
I put some pictures of him in different frames around my house already

I have Lil Red tattooed on me because of this board...I feel like I have to step up here lol. Most of my tattoos are very easily covered up by normal, everyday clothes, so I'm not afraid to get something that most people think is stupid - it's for me. I see that Lil Red on my leg all the time and it cracks me up...I love it. I just got a traditional-style pinup of my wife a few weeks back too. Might not be most people's cup of tea, but it's for me and the old lady.

That being said, portrait style is terrifying to me. You better find an artist that you really like and trust. What about the "generic" paw print, but you also add your dog's collar into the mix somehow? You can always meet with an artist and see what ideas they have that would be within their comfort zone.

Tattoos are pretty gay and most men that have them aren’t as tough as they want people to think they are.

The only good thing about a tattoo I’ve ever seen was some hot blonde in a tiny pink skirt lean over my wife with a laser removing the wife’s tattoo while the girl’s ass hung out of her skirt 3’ in front of my face.

This is 2025 and not 1983. Tattoos are ubiquitous now and not limited to prison gangs. I don't think the intention of most people getting tats is to look tough.

To each their own if they choose to get one. It's common enough where executives have them and don't hide them.
