Tater Island MASSIVE scoop

When you're constantly in 4th and short and you run a program that's comfortable fighting in a phone booth (like our HC does) you don't mind the challenge.

We also, coincidentally, are very good at defending 4th and short plays.
I am hopeful to get into coaching at some point.

Wrestling, Baseball, Football. Any of those would be cool. I am only 34 so I feel like I could start out by volunteering and eventually get some cool opportunities.

It's not for everybody. But for people like myself...every time I try to stop coaching, a year later I'm back on the field. Just love the interaction with the kids and other coaches.

Yeah that makes sense and I hear you. I grew up in the gym basically and looking back I realize how much better and more fun sports could have been had I been around better coaches and people that actually care about the kids. I'd like to think I could be a good person to help make the experience better. You only get 1 go around and regrets aren't ideal.

HS FB coaches GITT...

How prevalent is the rugby style punter in America HS football? I know a lot of CFB programs grab these guys from Australia, just curious if this is being taught at a lot of high schools. Or is this something punters learn in college?

Of the 20 to 22 Nebraska high school teams we saw per year we would have maybe 3 to 5 ruby style. With maybe 1 or 2 a true rugby punter.

Its more common to see a QB or position player do a ruby style because they didn't have a true punter. Or if they needed a shorter punt to pin a team near goal line.

Where do you live? If in Lincoln, I can't get you connected in any of those especially at a youth and middle school level. Possibly at the high school level in football.

HUGE bomb dropped on RRS. So huge that Sip had to tease it.

45 minutes later, Dean drops the bombshell

Glad Dean pulled over to tell us (or did he?)...but apparently Sip didn't have enough info to write those 3 shocking paragraphs above.

Greatest piece of hard hitting journalism since Pies and Salsa IMO
I should have taken a photo, but a couple of weeks ago there was a jar of salsa next to some left over pie in the fridge at work. I lol'd. Luckily I was alone in the break room so I didn't have to explain my outburst of laughter.

Is it just me or does Dean seems really obssessed with the whole "spring game attendance is down nationally" thing? He brings it up in every article he writes and podcast he does. I think he predicted this a while back and is really excited to show off him being right.

I am actually in KC. I have a few contacts but haven't found a great fit yet. I could have helped with a wrestling club this past winter, but life was a little busy.

If you know anyone in KC that would be cool! My wife teaches at St Agnes and that is a feeder school for Bishop Miege. I think I will eventually explore that as an option. Expecting my first kid in September so I will start getting involved naturally before too long!

This is what I've seen. Our 8 mam team has punted almost exclusively that way for the last decade or so. Lots of fake punts come off it. A couple of the guys were actually pretty legit punters though.

The key I found was to find the right age group. I really struggled with the 1st, 2nd graders because too many of them had ants in their pants and couldn't listen or sit still. That was very frustrating for me and I had a tendency to focus only on the kids that would listen which isn't ideal for a coach. I really like once they hit 4th, 5th, 6th grade and older. You get better focus and can teach them a lot better.

And actually, I found I like coaching girls more than the boys. Their attention and focus is 100 times better making it more enjoyable.

Dean finds something everything year that for whatever reason, he hammers on constantly.

I've coached girls and boys basketball. Girls will run your set plays the same way every time regardless of variables. Boys will run it once and then they will just free lance. That's partly why you see coaches run more patterned offenses in the girls game.

Just Dean kissing the North Stadium's ass. Trying to justify them not having a spring game. We will see how quick he changes it up now that they are having a limited one.

How did you get McCaff to finally play WR?

Suggestion, start at the Junior High level. Schools are always looking for good junior high coaches. Master teaching the fundamentals. No matter what level you coach, this is a critical skill. You will find out if coaching for you and there isn’t a ton of pressure. Coaches and AD’s talk, good coaches stand out and opportunities to move up to high school will come, This is exactly what I did and it worked out well.

I appreciate all the good feedback I've gotten!

I had the opportunity to help with the girls kids wrestling club in Tonganoxie which is West of KC this past year. I may be able to help this winter but I am expecting a newborn so I may have timed it poorly again. I like the idea of starting in that age range. I think I'll start to be more open and looking once I get past the newborn stage for the first time haha.
