Some thoughts on the Maryland game.

EJ is #8 in the country rushing.

I think with this OLine and a QB who isn’t mobile, you are going to get one of 2 things along with his good throws.

He holds too long but won’t make mistakes(sacks) or he gets it out quick but needs to take chances on receivers choice routes(more Int’s).

Dana is definitely trying different things all the time. I’m just really happy to have an OC with so much knowledge.

1. Pick #1. This is a concept that for whatever reason DR is a little rough on. Should've taken the route to the flat IMO, but comes off it a little late. DB had a bead on the concept, though Barney could've worked to the ball better. FWIW, we disguised the concept better later in the game (props to Dana) and Dylan worked to the spacing concept quicker.

2. Pick #2. Gottula gets beat right off the snap. DR buys some time, gets absolutely crushed letting the ball go, and wind catches it. Still didn't need to pitch it that far down field and guessing that one will be in the back of his mind getting rid of the ball going forward. DB also made a great play on the ball.

3. Pick #3. Misalignment between WR and QB on choice routes happens at every level of football. Not sure if this one was more on Mills or DR, but I would lean towards the true freshman.

Every rep is a learning opportunity. It's positive when you make the mistake, learn the lesson, and still get the W.

HH get that play once every couple games. He’s keeping the ball even if all 11 defenders are biting on him.
I’d like to see them run QB power just once with a lead blocker. Hate seeing HH at QB because you’re taking the ball out of your best players hands.

Haarbergs best as a runner going straight north/south, not trying to get the edge.

My favorite thing that happened was after throwing 3 picks he didn't go into a shell like he would last year (which I forgive him for as a true Freshman). Fought back and got the W

It was fun watching a qb march us down the field for a victory. We’ve had so many opportunities the past several years and could never do it

I get people looking at the box score and being excited about the low # of sacks allowed, but I think that's more due to Dana doing a great job neutralizing their pass rush with his play calling. Lots of screens and short passes that didn't give Mathis & Co time to get home.

OL (and everyone else pass blocking) still crappy, but Dana did a good job masking it yesterday.
Agree. Tip of the hat to Dana and play calling as well in this game. Good coaching adjusts and puts their team in a position to be successful.

The game winning drive with 3 picks on the books is probably the most important moment for Dylan thus far from a development standpoint. Could have just gone out there and seen ghosts but let the team down the field.

EJ is a gamer. I was really impressed with his ability to find extra yards in small spaces by finding an crease and he ended up with a monster game.

Hunter is the player we want Barney to be in space. I remember there was some nug about him running like a RB and we’ve seen that the last couple of weeks with his ability to move and stay up through contact.

We gave up more yards through the air but I’m still really impressed with our CBs. Both in coverage and tackling.

Long snapper/holder/kicker is our most improved “position.” The fact that I feel sos strongly about taking the points instead of trying to convert on fourth down after last season is insane. Ekeler should be a Broyles Award candidate after what we watched last season.

That Maryland QB is going to be good.

Curious @slattimer’s thoughts, but I would love to see us gap block more often, and especially do more with pin pull and adjacent concepts. Rocco moved well on power. Evans and Pritchett both have flashed well getting out in space and we blocked well pulling and getting out in space on EJ’s big run in the 4th.

I think the qb will stay at Maryland. They are building a very fun physical team. They have some absolute dogs that I’d love to have on our team.
A year from now if they continue to develop they will be a top 5 big 10 team.

The qb has a huge ceiling, just needs some seasoning.

But maybe we should make some money available for their DEs
