Some thoughts following game #2

1: Colorado looked like a team coached by Scott Frost.

2: T Hill finally found an interception return that he couldn't screw up. Remember last year when he would pick one off and then run some crazy direction that actually helped him not return it for 6? So glad the dude found the end zone this time.

3: Looks like we were just wasting our time worrying about the LBs this summer. (I'm super guilty) And I bet we get Wright back this week. (No info just fingers crossed)

4: Looks like all our worry about the kicker this summer was completely justifiable.

5: Colorado was basically UTEP but with Travis Hunter. I'm guessing our first actual test will be Illinois.

6: I didn't mind the conservative 2nd half. We've given away so many wins in the last decade I have no problem with playing a 28 point lead the way we did.

7: I wouldn't be surprised if we get 3-4 recruits for 25 or 26 from that game experience. Things couldn't have gone better from that perspective.

8; So glad to leave week 2 without any notable injuries that I'm aware of. Last year we had lost multiple starters in a variety of areas by now.

9: Is it good or bad that I almost forgot that Gifford is still playing at Nebraska? Has he made any noticeable plays? Seems like that might be a positive.

10: Raiola may not have lit the world on fire against Colorado but he manages the game better than anyone we've had in years and that is worth it's weight in gold.

The fightin Prime's got big problems



Depending on how you look at it (I look at it as a plus), I really didn't think Nebraska played that well. The offense wasn't particularly good, thought it was just ok but Dylan seemed to manage the game well. I thought they left some opportunities out there. Penalties obviously, besides the punting game special teams was bad, defense was good. Having said that, feels like a good sign overall. A lot of fixable things and we won comfortably.

I've said for about a year and a half the 30 for 30 about the Prime experiment at Colorado should be a good one when it comes out. Still firmly there after watching that game.

Gbayor is a very good player. It's wild to think he wouldn't be starting if Wright was healthy. IMO Gbayor is a great story of how this staff develops, and he's not the only one. If I remember correctly coming out of high school he was the defensive POY in New Jersey. He couldn't get on the field under Frost and I think most thought he was a transfer candidate. New staff comes in, he gets on the field last year and looks good. This year he looks like he could be a star.

I’m with that on the DBs. What’s nice is we’ve barely blitzed. I’d think that’d help the DBs a bit when those packages start coming out. Hopefully we don’t have to use them any time soon though.

Sipple has said repeatedly on air that we have to fix our long snapper problem. Said it was an issue all last week at practice. Above my paygrade but he was emphatic every time he brought it up.

Good observations OP.

I was obviously super happy with the first half and after sleeping on it a bit I get our gameplan for the second half. Keep in vanilla on offense and trust our defense.

I also liked that our second team defense got in a bunch of snaps in the second half.

What I also noticed is that in the second half Colorado’s defense started out go after Dowdell’s knees as a way of tackling him. It worked but it’s a total chicken shit thing to do. Fuck them.

All that said, I do think Satt’s play calling in the second half - while purposely vanilla - was about on par with my 12 year old son on College Football 25. You can still be creative and set up a strategy while keeping things vanilla. He got into a rut for a while.

I hope it’s just a function of phoning it in and not being a butthead. Time will tell there.

If we get him back it will be very limited. I'd guess limited in Illinois and decent reps the following week. Remember he hadn't run or lifted weights or anything like that for 2 months up until middle of last week.

I know there were multiple bad snaps last week on PAT’s against UTEP. Whole thing is a shit show.

When we did out tpb podcast that never got finished we picked one recruit that we were excited about. My pick was Gbayor. Up until last year I thought my pick was on par for my extensive knowledge of evaluating recruits. Now I look like a genius.

That one was 100% on the snap/hold process. Alvano had to stop mid-stride, then do a funky one step & hurry kick after the ball was down.

Can't be good for Tristan's focus & confidence if he has it in the back of his mind that he has to be ready for some adjustment mid-kick.

1. Dylan won't get as many kudos after this week, but man is the dude impressive. ~73% completion percentage on the year and over 75% against CU. Love what Satterfield and Thomas are doing to set him up for success. Even on drives that stall out, we're consistently getting completions and are just a missed tackle/couple yards away from moving the chains. Stats look even better without refball and a couple drops. He's also generated three PI calls, which won't show up on the stat sheet. Another week with a 2 min drill TD, long TD drive (86 yard drive for TD #2), and big pass play to dig us out of a penalty hole on 2nd and long.

2. Watching James Lynch at Baylor was the first time Rhule really popped for me. There was a guy who wanted to be Husker and we passed on, who had been developed into a 4th round pick. It was the exact sort of player that seemingly everyone else in the Big 10 had been able to develop and we haven't for almost a decade. Great story building with what Rhule and Knighton have been able to do with Ty. He was unblockable on Saturday and is becoming the player we all expected.

3. I do not have tell any Nebraska fan how erotic it is to see DL play like this.

4. Rhule was probably secretly stoked about the 2nd half. Gives him a ton of teach tape and ammo to continue to develop and keep the team hungry.

5. We'll see if we stall out in any games this year, but I think the worries about the second half are a little exaggerated. Completely different picture without refball and there was no reason to sling it on 2nd/3rd and long to dig out of the penalty hole.

6. Following on 4, I really like what we're doing on offense right now. We've been efficient on offense, run the ball consistently, and I really like how we attack the edge w/ our RPOs and screen/quick game. Love how we're using our TEs and how we're using Rahmir in the passing game. We've drawn up some WIDE open TD chances. Barney is going to be a dude.

I'm afraid B1G teams are going to be able to create matchup problems against Hartzog and Buford.

Hopefully Blye Hill gets healthy enough to come in and play against bigger receivers.
