So still not considering a ST coach?

There was honestly a part of who thought that if we upgraded at kicker and punter we could possibly get by without a ST coordinator and could instead use the opportunity to stack the offensive side of the ball with solid coaches and recruiters.

I do not think that anymore.

There is 0% chance there is not a full-time ST Coordinator on staff next season. The only question at this point is how they’re going to structure the position coaches on offense.

From everything I have heard was what @Fargo Husker said. Then you give up a house call, don't have any return game whatsoever and have a punt blocked. I think that the talk for a special teams coordinator has shifted 180.

It is tough imo to get it without losing somebody on defense. The cleanest situation you could have is a guy like Dawson leaves, Chins takes DC/OLBs and you hire a guy like Snyder.

OC/QB - ?
RB - ?
WR - ?
TE - Beckton
OL - ?

DC - Chins
DL - T
OLB - Dawson
ILB - Ruud
DB - Fish

Now a guy like Snyder coached TEs at Texas. So do you have Beckton do both TE/WRs and have Snyder help with the TEs? But that means Mickey Joseph doesn't have a seat at the table.

This is where a guy like Jay Boulware becomes intriguing. Coached ST/RB at Oklahoma and ISU I believe for almost a decade. Sounds like his ST units were going downhill a bit towards the end of his tenure, but did have some good success and coached some really good RBs at OU. From what I can gather he’s working with the Pittsburgh Steelers in some capacity right now.

I’m torn on the ST coach topic. On one side, I know how simple special teams is, kickers and punter learn everything they’ll ever learn about what they do in camps through middle school and high school. Assignments on special teams are simple AF and any high school coach would be able to teach them, I don’t think enough fans realize you don’t get any teaching benefit from hiring a dedicated ST coach.

On the other hand, there’s value in having a coach fighting for more practice minutes, a finger on the pulse of how much confidence to have in each specialist, focused filling specific roles with the best players on the roster, a guy who’s accountable solely for the performance of special teams who can tell Frost, “look man - if you don’t give me more time in practice, this is going to look like shit”.

I could argue either way so I’m deciding I don’t give a shit. If it were me though, I wouldn’t hire a ST coach, but I’d gather input from each coach on why they’ve failed to this point and address every shortcoming. It has to be a priority all off-season
