The way I understand it, paying Rhule $10 million is basically making him work for free (since he's already getting $10 million a year whether he works or not). I think that may be the issue here.

Rhule is not getting $10 million/year from Carolina. He signed a contract for $8.8 million/year. His remaining contract owes him around $40 million and has over 4 years left on it. Paying him $10 million/year would give him a $1.2 million/year raise. Thats almost a 14% raise, not bad in my book. Rhule loves football and has said he wants to be back on the field coaching. Really misses it after only being out for 6 weeks. Open the checkbook and pay the man Turd.

If he got offered 10 mil and turned it down how would that work with his buyout? Even if he'd inevitably win Tepper may make him sue.

Just ask Nebraska to cover his legal fees as part of the negotiation - with a cap on what you'd spend.
