We started out 5-3, then finished the season 5-7 after a full half season (almost) of “extra practices”. From my vantage point, the things that cost us those four games aren’t things that get fixed in practices, otherwise they would have been.
Rhule learned the same thing Scott Frost did with this primary cast of characters on offense. Most of them just aren’t good enough. Sprinkling players who have fundamental ball control and interception issues that also don’t really get fixed at this point in their career, and you have a team again that can’t close the deal at end of because something always seems to happen at the worst time.
People wanna blame that on luck, but it’s not. It’s a lack of talent or players with fundamental flaws in their game that don’t belong playing at this level of football. Especially when it’s happened repeatedly at the rated has with this roster.
Everything plays on each other. When you don’t have an offensive line that can generate holes for a running game, the OC is forced to change the approach. That in turn makes the team more one dimensional and forces quarterbacks to play in a difficult passing situations when they aren’t equipped to, which increases turnovers when they aren’t elite.
Sprinkle in injuries and having to play B level backups increase the likelihood of mistakes on top of that across-the-board. That’s what happens when you don’t have depth, which Nebraska can’t have because we’ve sucked for so long.
At this point in Nebraska history, there’s no way to “coach” your way out of this situation, outside of the recruiting part of their job. Everyone should be laser focused on how this staff is recruiting and at what level it’s recruiting and replacing the current kids on the roster that can’t play at this level. That is thing Rhule should be judged on at this point.
If we see Rhule starting to struggle to get difference makers on offense and defense on the staff, I’m telling you… We will simply watch the same groundhog show all over again the next five years that we have for the past 4 staffs. It has to start with a high number of quality players on both sides of the ball.
We finally have a competent head coach. But even that won’t be good enough if we continue to get B rated 3 stars as the majority of our roster to come here.
