A neighbor of mine told me his dog scared up a rattlesnake in an unmowed area near our neighborhood. There are definitely bull snakes, but I’ve never seen a rattler. I’ve never thought they exist around these parts. Does the PB believe my neighbor, or is he a damned liar?

I'd really bet there's too much going on there for it to be a rattlesnake. There's a reason they like the rural areas and the sandhills. They wanna be away from the noise.

As I typed that, I'm starting to think I might be a rattlesnake.

Definitely possible.

Nebraska

Timber rattlesnakes live in the southeastern tip of the state, not far from Lincoln. Around the same area, there used to be a western massasauga population, too. However, these snakes are now critically endangered.

You can also find prairie rattlesnakes, especially in the western half of the state, west of Lexington, and definitely around North Platte. They also live all along the border with South Dakota. These snakes are common across most of the Midwest.

This board is more herpes-tologists than herpetologists, IMO.

Was it a prairie rattler? They're not native to Northeast Kansas, but we've had 2 in my life time close to my parents house which right near a UP railroad line. They've been known to slither up on rail cars as trains are parked in the sandhills/Wyoming and then end up here when trains are parked for crew shifts/etc

No idea, he says he heard a rattle after his dog disturbed the snake. I’ve seen bull snakes in this area, so I’m 50/50 on whether I believe he heard a rattle, or whether it was just dead leaves or debris. He’s not a total idiot, and he’s from Utah, so he should be familiar with rattlesnakes. 🤷‍♂️
