Raiola played well. The advanced statistics back it up in addition to the eyeball test.

Here's a really remarkable stat:

Raiola was 13 of 14 passing in the 4th quarter, included 12 straight to finish the game.

Here's a terrible stat:

The Huskers rushed for 6 total yards after Cincinnati scored to make it a 3 point game.
Now compare that to Illinois 4th q and OT last year where he certainly did NOT complete 12 straight

Just my opinion, Dylan played well, my concern is the whole offense in general, it just seems slow and clunky in every aspect. From body language of the players in the huddle to getting off the ball to just how it seems so hard to do what we want or even know what we want to do. Holgerson just seems not comfortable with what he is doing and the whole thing is not very smooth or fits together.

I saw a lot of ‘first game’ issues I think will get better. The players looked a little out of sorts at times Thursday night, and I think some of that is easily explained away. Really don’t want to see any of it again, so hope it works out quickly.

On the offense in general, I get the feeling Holgorsen is struggling with balancing the desire to run the ball with taking what’s given with running what he wants. I’ll give him credit in that he didn’t pull a Frost or a Satterfield and just keep shoving a square peg in a round hole because it’s what he wants to do and he’s smarter. That said, I don’t want that to be the footprint to 8 or 9 wins this year.

I rewatched the game yesterday on a flight and I was sober (mostly) and actually thought Holgs called a good game. There were 5 or 6 runs where if EJ makes a different cut he’s getting 20+ yards. Would also love if we had Dowdell on this team.

If Hunter doesn't jump for that he walks in for a TD
I feel like this type of thing has been a problem forever. Whether it’s a receiver or running back, we always can’t quite slip the shoe string tackle or keep our footing. The perceived lack of explosiveness can be tied somewhat directly to how often this occurs. Didn’t Mills have one too where he fell down with no one near him?

Imagine how different the narrative is if those 2 guys keep their footing? Suddenly he’s well over 300 yards passing, and he’s done absolutely nothing different.

I thought Mills' was because the throw was behind him, but could be misremembering

Would love to have Dowdell right now. Wonder if the coaches would like a do over there. The young guys didn’t even get a chance to showcase their skills. They must be that far behind on pass blocking, which is understandable for Mozee, but inexcusable for Nelson or Ives. And ultimately it’s inexcusable for Barthel.

Agree on the calls. Other than the jet sweep that never works for us, he was pretty spot on.

Seems we’ve had some version of what you describe with EJ at all skill positions for a while now. Guys who don’t run with the ball instinctively. Perfect call and execution and the guy with the rock zigs when he should zag or in most of our running backs case, dick around dancing when you should plant a foot and go. You can improve that with film study and coaching, but it’s got to be instinctive for maximum results.

On the 2nd watch I will also say I was impressed with EJ’s ball security based on the hits he was taking. Might have been the most impressive part of his game to me.

Kind of off topic but we still haven’t had a 300 yard passing game in years, correct?

I understand people are disappointed with that play but remember Barney almost scored on that exact same play earlier in the 4th quarter. When it went for 13 yards Holgorson likely circled the play to come back to later. Easy to criticize in hindsight.
