Quick hits from Scott Frost's Monday press conference
ByMICHAEL BRUNTZ 15 minutes agoNebraska head coach Scott Frost met with the media on Monday to discuss his team’s effort against then-No. 3 Oklahoma, preview Michigan State and hit on a number of other topics. Here’s a quick rundown of news and notes.
— Freshman running back Gabe Ervin suffered a patellar tendon injury during Saturday’s game against Oklahoma. Frost stopped short of calling the injury a season-ending injury, but the freshman from Georgia will miss an extended period of time.
— Frost said Omar Manning can be a good story if he continues the trajectory he’s on. Frost said it was difficult to be patient with Manning as he went through mental health issues as a coach, because you want a talented player on the field, but it was necessary to be patient as Manning worked through his issues.
— Frost said having both Travis Vokolek and Austin Allen at tight end help Nebraska in the pass and running game. “Those guys are two of our best players, and we’re glad to have them,” Frost said.
— Frost said he wants to see more crease runs from the offense to generate more explosive plays in the run game.
— Frost said using more tight ends in his offense has been partially in response to the Big Ten, and also having talented tight ends in his group.
— The offensive line is still a “work in progress” according to Frost. He said battles will continue at the left guard spot where Nebraska started Trent Hixson over Ethan Piper. Broc Bando will also enter the mix to potentially compete to start.
“A lot of guys who can do it, would love it if somebody grabs a hold of that spot and takes it,” Frost said.
— Frost said there aren’t a ton of similarities between what Mel Tucker’s teams did schematically at Colorado versus Michigan State.
— At running back, Frost said Nebraska would like to have one featured back, but right now they have several backs who can get in and do some things. He said they’re going to let the backs continue to compete. Rahmir Johnson started against Oklahoma, and said Johnson has been practicing well for a long time. “I thought he took advantage of the opportunity,” Frost said.
— Frost said that freshman Teddy Prochazka is going to be in the mix for potentially playing more going forward. Prochazka served as an extra blocking tight end against Oklahoma.
— Frost asked about the pushing and shoving match with Oklahoma players during warmups: “We’re going to keep our team on our side of the field,” Frost said.
— Nebraska’s secondary is mitigating big plays with speed and good eye discipline, Frost said.
— Frost says he has a lot of faith in kicker Connor Culp, and trusts that Culp can get things right after a tough start to the season. Frost said, though, that the kicking job is open for this week. “We have to do what’s best for the team and we’re going to play the guy at any position who gives us the best chance to win,” Frost said.
