QB Recruiting going forward

I posted this in another thread, but maybe it's a worthy discussion on its own.

QB recruiting has to change, I think (and this is a shift in thought for me). I'll start by saying that I don't think it's sustainable to bring in 20+ transfers every year and practically fill an entire roster, I think you still need to build a solid base from HS ranks...but I do believe firmly that you should be filling in recruiting gaps with the portal.

However, I'm coming around to the idea that while you recruit HS QB's and develop them, you don't PAY them big money (unless they're bigtime and will contribute right away). Instead you pay transfers if your QB doesn't develop.

It does not seem like they are good long term investments....

This is super interesting (and shouldn't be a huge surprise to anyone):

2023 class: 7 out of the top 8 QB's transferred
2024 class (Dylan): 7 out of the top 9 QB's transferred

You have 14 out of the 17 top HS QB recruits transferring within 2 years. Pretty nuts.

I don't buy the "you don't recruit HS QB's anymore" but I will say unless you think he's a day 1 starter, you don't pay HS QB's anymore.

And for those who say, "See, I told you Dylan would transfer". Well yeah, that's just what you have to expect QBs to do now (unless they somehow are able to bring in contracts).

So if I'm running a college program, I'll throw some money at the very top 2-3 guys maybe...but after that I'll recruit some guys I think can develop and then just hire a new QB every year I don't have a dude behind center.

The most likely positions for immediate impact out of HS are WR, DB, RB, maybe edge. These are usually the physical freak types that can transition because they have the athleticism necessary.

After that it take time to develop physically and that seems like the best area to target your portal cash imo.

You can go even a step further, we grabbed the best QB AND started him, and he still transferred. Pretty nuts.

I think you need to just be ok with your QB roster resetting every 3-4 years. What I would do as a head coach is bring in 2 HS QBs my first recruiting class, and then a transfer that was going to be the starter for hopefully 2 years. Let the HS guys duke it out, bring in another one the following recruiting year, so then you have 3 battling it out after your transfer leaves. QB is one of the positions where if you don't start you just expect people to leave, so then you just have to start over and grab 2 HS kids and grab a backup QB just wanting to make some extra money.

QBs transfer so much because only one can play. It's a finicky position. But I'm with you, unless you have Raiola that is a five star you don't pay them money out of high school.
