Punk

I'll start if we are doing a List, wish the Ramones were on my List but I never got to see them.

A couple that are more Pop Punk but put on good shows were:
-Green Day ( amazing show every time, and those guys have fun on and off the stage.)
-Blink 182 (funny guys, that actually like playing hoops when on tour, except for Travis. Travis's ex wife who was a Playboy Playmate use to sit around the house all day in bed smoking pot and watching porn).
-The Replacements

Some of the better Punk Shows I have been involved with were:
-Suicidal Tendencies
-Social Distortion
-Dropkick Murphy's
-Flogging Molly
-Bad Religion
-Unwritten Law
-Strung Out
-Rise Against
-Poison the Well
-Reverend Horton Heat (Rockabilly Punk)
-Sum 41
-Rancid
-Guttermouth
-Mustard Plug

Some that I saw past their primes, that disappointed:
-Dead Kennedy's w/ Brandon Cruz as Lead Singer. Supposedly one of the sick fucks in the band picked up some 14 year old girl at a gas station in Steamboat Springs and fucked her. That didn't sit well with me. I was professional with them but didn't try to be buddy buddy with them after hearing that. Never did a show with Jello Biafra, and didn't want to. Heard he was a nightmare to deal with.
-Bad Brains (HR - Human Rights - before a show decided he wasn't going to play unless we got him crack and a hooker. He did not win that conversation. I literally sat right across from him in the Green Room for 2 straight hours making sure he didn't get all cracked out while his band went out to grab dinner. Weird cat, who would barely talk. The band was impressed I sat there and kept him straight as they hated playing with him when he was out of his mind)

I put in countless offers for The Misfits & Pennywise but could never get one of their shows booked.

My college roommate was a big Unwritten Law fan. I became a fan of some of their stuff from having to listen to them a bunch. Any interesting stories?

I have a couple decent stories about Unwritten Law, nothing epic. I lined it up so they would have a free day of skiing and ski rentals on Vail Mountain. Even had an Ski/Snowboard Instructor that was going to be with them giving lessons and tour guiding them on the mountain. They came in a day early to party and play on the mountain. We had Dirty Dozen Brass Band playing the night before and lets just say the band and I drank quite a bit during that show. They got so drunk that guitarist Rob Brewer was the only one who could physically function enough the next day to Snowboard. When Rob showed up for Soundcheck after snowboarding he said it was the "Best Day of my Life". The head of the Snowboard School was with him all day giving him lessons, showing him around the mountain and cutting Lift Lines.

It is pretty obvious that Rob has some serious anger issues. Total agro Meathead. During the concert he got into a shouting match with a fan when they started playing "Seeing Red" which was their Bubble Gum Radio Hit. The fan started yelling they were sell outs. We had to physically hold Rob back as he was trying to jump off stage into the crowd to fight the guy.

Fast forward to after the show in the Green Room where booze was flowing. The band decided to invite all kinds of fans back there to party. I paid Rob & Scott the remainder of the money owed after the show. Well someone they were partying with in the Green Room late night stole their briefcase that had the money in it. It was only like $3,000 but the briefcase also had the contracts and riders for the rest of the shows on the tour. I was ready for Rob to blow a gasket on me but he was drunk and just said "Oh well, we fucked up by letting all those fans back here".

A couple years later Rob got kicked out of the band when he got into a physical confrontation on stage with lead singer Scott Russo.

Can you call yourself a punk band if your singer isn’t a heroin addict at some point? I think it’s necessary for a line like “cracked out and sleepless in seattle, got drunk and barfed on my shadow.” Great song though.

Haha. In that video ... nothing says "I'm wasted" like stripping down and crowd surfing nekkid. Duuuuuuude ...

It wasn't a phase mom

Thanks, I always enjoy the first hand stories regardless if I know the bands or not.

I agree, and the sad part is I could write a friggin amazing book about life in the Music Industry. But I could never in good faith throw these Musicians under the bus by printing stories about them. They are what they are and I respect the enjoyment they bring Music Fans. Not an easy life at times for touring Musicians even though most fans think it is just banging groupies and partying. Rough life on the road, especially if you are a mid level band or lower.

As someone who did a bunch of touring as a fill in for metal bands, road life sucks. I love playing shows. But dear lord does the day to day grind in a low level band barely scraping by is miserable. You have to truly love music and what you do to stay on the road now a days with all the other avenues to make money off of music.

Musicians are just art majors who never went to college

Oh yeah for sure. I definitely have incredible amount respect for those people. I’ve always been in awe of music in general but especially musicians. Just being able to do something I couldn’t even fathom doing, making and producing music.

Whenever I’m getting tickets to a concert I always seem to check out all their tour dates and venues. Most generally to find set lists before the concert but I’m always interested in how long they’ve been on the road, destinations, and if my concert is a back-to-back. Makes one ponder, regardless of money, if that’s something you’d wanna do for that many months out of the year. Definitely not for me.
