This gets brought up with the idea of hiring a new coach. We should only be looking for coaches who are "proven winners at the Power 5 level." That sounds great in theory, so I decided to make an actual list of those candidates. Here are the current Power 5 coaches with higher than .600 winning percentage at their current school (minimum 2 full years at current school), which to me is what I would consider a "proven winner" at this level:

Dabo Swinney - Clemson - 143-36
Lincoln Riley - Oklahoma - 52-8
Mike Gundy - Oklahoma State - 143-67
Gary Patterson - TCU - 181-77
Kirk Ferentz - Cockeye - 174-107
Ryan Day - OSU - 28-3
James Franklin - PSU - 64-29
Paul Chryst - Wisconsin - 59-22
Mario Cristobal - Oregon - 30-11
David Shaw - Stanford - 93-40
Kyle Whittingham - Utah - 138-68
Nick Saban - Alabama - 170-24
Dan Mullen - Florida - 33-12
Kirby Smart - Georgia - 59-13
Ed Orgeron (already fired but finishing the year) - LSU - 49-17
Jimbo Fisher - A&M - 31-12

So what does everybody think? Who might pick up our phone call?

Unfortunately I agree. I had a hunch when I wrote this post and seeing the actual names laid out makes me pretty certain:

I have a bad feeling that this next hire will shatter a lot of peoples' illusions about NU's place in the college football world. Doesn't mean we can't get an upgrade, but I'll be absolutely shocked if we end up with anybody in the current top-tier.

Why? He’s already making 5+ mill at a place with much lower expectations, easier to croot.
In a conference that is Group of 5 now. If he wants the easy life then sure, he should stay there.

He’s also 61 years old. Not sure how much longer he plans to keep coaching but leaving a school who’s gonna put you in its hall of fame is a tough sell for someone with that type of legacy already.

Bronco Mendenhal
Joe Moorhead - zero fucks that those bell ringers in Hattiesberg didn't like him. The dude can coach
Pat Narduzzi

There's others I'd like to see, but some names I haven't seen mentioned.
I wonder if UConn or Syracuse makes a run at Moorhead.

I'm assuming Syracuse is firing Babers. Even though I have a relative on staff that would likely lose his job as well.

I wonder how the fanbase would react to hiring a guy that got fired at his last job. Moorhead @slattimer, I think Dan Mullen could see himself getting fired as he hasn't beaten a power 5 team in a long time at Florida. Justin Fuente is going to get fired.

Fuente I wouldn't look at, I think Mullen is a good coach, I don't know what's going wrong at Florida. I think Moorhead is a good play caller, basically saved James Franklin's job at Penn State but I think he's a northeastern type of guy.

Some other assistants to think about besides Moorhead...Mike Elko, Marcus Freeman, Alex Grinch, Bill OBrien (think he's been mentioned in another thread).

Would you sell your soul and be ok with Nebraska hiring Art Briles. He's old, I know, but he's probably one of the best coaches in the nation.

Mendenhal would be very intriguing.
A lot to like here, but my general rule of thumb is whenever academics starts to be known in how good a coach is it is generally a major red flag.

Moorhead is a fucking offensive genius. He kept deep dicking Ohio State and it was glorious.

Narduzzi is interesting. I would be curious about what he could do at a better school. Not sure I would be overly excited here, but think he is a good coach.

Narduzzi is having a good year. He otherwise is a really shitty recruiter and Pitt fans have been actively conflicted this year b/c they don't want him to be too successful and get a contract extension.
Mendenhal is fine. Sitake had a bad first year or two, but he's been even better than Bronco at this point, so Idk how much weight to give his success at BYU. I do not think his ceiling is very high, but the floor isn't very low.
Moorhead is a good offensive coach. Got a rough deal at MSU, but I have no idea how he'd do in a another run.

You're going to have to walk me through the academic is a major red flag? We thinking book learning might turn the the team into libs?

Usually when a coach is on a hot seat they start talking about how great they are doing in school and graduating men...

I said it more tongue and cheek, but it happens.
