(Sorry long post)

I know what you are all thinking. Who the fuck is stupid enough to deal with the airlines around Christmas time? Well let it be known that @Poor_and_Stupid knew it was bad idea, but he let his wife’s family drag him along anyhow.

We were flying out to see my brother-in-law who is in the Marines. He’s based at Quantico, Virginia which is just south of D.C.

The first bad omen came a few days before we left. We had a direct flight from Omaha to D.C. that got cancelled. Now we had to fly into Chicago (now to be referred to as Chiraq for the rest of the post.) The flight from Omaha to Chiraq was good. It was pretty much right on time. Got to Chiraq Midway (we were flying Southwest) around 12:00 P.M. and our connection to D.C. was scheduled for 1:00. It had already been delayed to 1:40 but no big deal.

We find our gate and we are there for about an hour and then they announce that the plane we were supposed to fly on has been decommissioned for maintenance or something like that so they send us to another gate. After 45 minutes at the next gate they tell us they are changing the gate again. We head to that gate and wait around for at least an hour before they tell us they need to find one more flight attendant. I think it was about 4:00 when one showed up to cheers from many of the poor souls in attendance.

They promptly get us on the plane. We are sitting for awhile and nothing is happening. My mother-in-law then says that they are now taking luggage back out of the plane. We were told that they put baggage from the next flight on our plane and that they were sorting it out. This took like 2 hours. The flight attendants said they didn’t know what the hold up was, but we thought they were keeping something from us.

Now I think it was roughly 6:30 and now since that took so long one of our pilot’s timed out and couldn’t legally fly the plane. So now they are looking for another pilot. They actually let us deplane and buy food which I’ve never seen before. Roughly 8:00 another pilot shows up to cheers from the passengers. Things are looking positive, but then another pilot shows up. They are having a discussion and their facial expressions are concerning. Both of these guys showed up but we only needed one of them. Our copilot was still a guy from earlier. They were on the phone trying to figure out which one of them was officially supposed to fly the plane or some shit like that. It was about 9:00 by the time that finally got sorted out.

The plane is finally airborne a sometime after 10:00. Things are looking up, but it was a false sense of hope. This post is getting too long so in short, we waited around the baggage claim until 4:00 A.M. eastern time but our bags would never come up. Tons of bags were coming but they were from a bunch of cancelled flights. Finally we were told from some other people on our flight that the baggage service lady told them that our entire flight’s luggage was still in Chiraq. Thanks for letting us stand around for 4 hours for nothing stupid cock suckers. At least announce that to us. Not sure where our shit is but they say it should still come to D.C. but I guess we will see.

Hope everyone had a better Christmas Day than me. Only success of the whole experience was that the plane didn’t crash.

I have to tell my worst traveling day experience of my life, as any time I hear a story like this it bring me terrifying flashbacks.

My wife and I were set to fly home from Barcelona to D.C then back to Denver after our honeymoon.

We arrived at the Barcelona airport about 4 hours early, which we thought would have been plenty of time. For some reason, there was only one United Airlines representative working, and hundreds of people trying to check in. We got in to a SUPER long line with hundreds of angry people. After an hour or two, they opened a 2nd line just for international passengers. This meant that people that just arrived were suddenly in front of us in line.

We finally get to the front of the line and check in. We hustle to our gate, try to board, when I am told that I was randomly selected for a security check. I'm lead away to a room full of other "randoms". I sit down and they call names one by one. (It's very close to our boarding time now so I am stressed AF). After awhile, I've noticed that people who were seated after me have been called and left, so I find someone and ask WTF is going on. They tell me they "forgot" I was there. I'm finally taken back and given basically a full anal cavity search.

I'm finally lead back to our gate where just my wife remains, as she refused to get on the plane without me. We are told to hustle on, and get to our seats.

We then sat on the tarmac for OVER 2 HOURS for issues with "wind". Oh, also my tv in my seat was the only one on board the plane that was non-working, so I was preparing myself for a 12 hour flight with no entertainment.

We obviously were going to miss our connecting flight in DC. Luckily, my wife found one and re-booked us for a later one to Denver. We finally took off and I somehow survived the flight with no television.

We land in DC. You guessed it, we are stuck on the tarmac. This lasted another hour or so. It is literally boarding time for our flight to Denver, so we SPRINT to our gate. We get there I shit you not as they are closing the doors. But guess what, I'm told that I WAS RANDOMLY SELECTED FOR A SECURITY SEARCH. I explain that it must be some glitch because I was already selected in Barcelona and they are probably just seeing that carry over. They don't care. I SPRINT to the nearest security checkpoint. I left my carry on with my wife hoping that this would speed things up. When I get to the checkpoint, they tell me that I HAVE to have bag to search so I sprint back to the gate, then back to security again. I've probably ran 18 miles at this point.

As I'm going through the security check, the guy in front of me was also a random in Barcelona and again here in DC like me. He is belligerent, super fucking pissed and making sure everyone knows. (I of course was also pissed but more quiet about it). It gets to the point where they aren't doing my search anymore because they need extra security on this guy. He then gets arrested, as I am standing there pleading for someone to come check me so that I can make my flight. I didn't make it.

I'm sure I missed some details but this was a brief recap of the worst day of my life.

Mine isn’t that bad. But you mentioning running 18 miles brings me back….

My wife had family that lives in Missoula. She says hey, let’s go visit my aunt and uncle over Xmas break. Um. Okay. So we fly out of KC. Connect in Minnesota and fly to Bozeman. Uncle comes and picks us up and we basically drive thru a blizzard to get back to Missoula. Anwyas. The flight back is where I about lost my mind.

We get to Bozeman. Boarding was no issue. But, we wait on the tarmac for what seemed like forever waiting to de ice the plane a second time. Mind you. I’m anxious to get back because there is a big ass snow storm approaching the KC area and I have no idea if we’re going to get back. We finally depart and get to Minny with about 10 minutes or so to spare before our plane departs for KC.

And of course. The gate is all the way across the airport. I Fuckikg ran a 4 minute mile hauling my luggage and my wife’s and tugging her ass along to make the flight.

We get to the gate just in time. And they rush our ass on because it’s the last flight they’re letting out to KC. I’ve got asthma so I was wheezing like I was dying. Sit down and the flight attendant yells at me to put my buckle on. I said listen. I need one second to take a puff.

We made it back to KC. And then had to drive home 2 hours through a storm that dumped 12-16” of snow.
