I think it will be similar to this year, but I think Smothers will play within the scheme more than Martinez does.

So I think what they are trying to do will be similar, but I think how it is executed will look different.

There are a lot of passes I feel Martinez doesn't throw that are #1 reads that he doesn't throw trying to go for a bigger play. For example....

I'm actually fairly bullish on Smothers because when he's been in it seems like he runs an actual offense rather than turns it into the YOLO Martinez show. Not that Martinez isn't capable of doing lots of great shit when he yolos, just that he's more boom or bust

I would agree with that.

You have to take the good with the bad when it comes to Martinez. I would be very curious how he would do if he was on an offense where he didn't have to be the best player.

Smothers first step is electric, definitely something there. Also I feel he has made significant progress. Last year Martinez was clear #1. This year like you've stated there isn't a huge drop off when he is in and appears by the limited viewings is only slightly behind Martinez.

If Smothers could throw the deep ball I'd be more bullish on him. Some of his passes give me McCaffrey vibes.

I'm curious how much the Oline play has stunted/ hurt Martinez's development. Not sure what his progressions are but even with time he continuously misses wide open receivers every game.

I think he's way less dumb. McCaffrey had the combination of traits that make for the worst QB: bad arm and a belief that he has a good arm. I think Smothers is more aware of his limitations

I wonder if we had an RB like Ozigbo who could rip off big plays what Martinez's career would have looked like.

PFF loves Smothers. He's The #1 ranked qb with no minimum snaps.

I mean between his soph through senior he has had some real valleys in talent around him.

Soph that wr core was awful. Bunch of midgets running around.

Junior year WRs weren't much better.

This year WRs are better but OL is worst in the B1G in pass pro.

He really has never had a good RB run game next to him short of his freshmen year.

I don't expect him to be perfect, but I think he is a very talented QB. I don't know if he can throw the ball over the middle well enough to take the next step, but idk if that's fixable.

Like what happens if you plant him on a team with a middle of the road RB run game, top 6 B1G OL and this WRs/TEs?

Smothers is a glorified Mccaffrey. Slightly better thrower, slightly worse runner.

I don't understand why everyone would rather have Smothers than Rattler. It would be for one year. Let Smothers develop for one more year but by that time Haarberg will probably pass him up.

If Martinez is gone, they need to bring in a transfer QB.

Ya I think everyone is in agreement, Martinez over Rattler but if Martinez is gone I have no problem with them going after Rattler or another high-profile transfer. All camp we heard about how big of a dropoff there was from Martinez to the backups.

I don't think Haarberg passes Smotherd 2022 but probably 2023.

I'd take any transfer QB over Rattler. It's one thing to have a guy that turns the ball over at poor times (Martinez), it's another to have that same guy thats an awful teammate and less running skills.

If you're gonna be the QB, you either gotta be as well liked as anyone on the team or such an insane competitor that the team has no choice but to keep up with you. It's too often forgotten how important leadership is from the QB position in relation to the success of the team.

Absolutely need a qb that can hit those throws, really hope Smothers is that guy. I think he’s looked good in the limited action he’s gotten this year.
