Pat Forde column on Coaching Carousel Chaos (Rhule)

Penn State wouldn't do well with a year 1-2 Matt Rhule. Kiffin at Texas would be awesome. Would love to see that. Don't care about the rest. Highly doubtful. Still think Cignetti to Florida in a few months is very much on the table.
I could see that

Ya know what, in the hypotheticals of Rhule taking the Penn State job if it opened up, you throw the absolute United States of America at Lane Kiffin to come here, and I'm fully on board with that. Recruiting would get WILD around here.
Does he get here fall of 2026 or 2027? That's important because my daughter would no longer be there in 2027.

Here are the jobs On3 is monitoring as we enter October, and more coaching changes are expected:

Auburn: The Tigers currently sit at 3-2 with a 0-2 mark in the SEC in Hugh Freeze’s third season on The Plains. With Georgia coming to town, all eyes will be on how the Tigers look following the bye week. One thing not working in Freeze’s favor is his buyout. At only $15.4 million, it’s manageable and something Auburn can pay if the Tigers do not show improvement. Auburn is at risk of falling to 0-4 in the SEC if it can’t pick up wins over Georgia and Missouri in back-to-back weeks at home. While the schedule becomes more manageable from there, starting the season winless in the SEC will have Freeze squarely on the hot seat.

Florida: The Gaytors picked up a 29-21 win over Texas on Saturday, which had industry sources already pointing to a second-half of-the-season turnaround for Billy Napier similar to last year. Florida still controls its destiny and could run the table. To do that, it would have to start by beating Texas A&M on the road this weekend. Similar to how the Texas game was viewed, how the Gaytors look against the Aggies will go a long way. Win the game or lose close, and the narrative continues that Napier is engineering another turnaround. Lose big on the road, and there will be pressure to make a move before hosting Mississippi State or during the bye week leading into Georgia. Safe to say the win over Texas has not changed much about Napier sitting on the hot seat — he will have to keep winning to do that. The Gaytors would owe Napier roughly $20.4 million.

North Carolina: Through five games at Chapel Hill, the Bill Belichick experience has not gone as planned. The Tar Heels are 2-3 and have yet to beat a Power Four team. The Tar Heels rank 128th in points per game out of 136 FBS teams. Belichick’s contract is guaranteed through Dec. 31, 2027. If North Carolina lets him go without cause, they owe him whatever’s left on that $30 million. What comes next for Belichick and North Carolina is uncertain. Belichick could return for a second season and spend more cash in the transfer portal. The Super Bowl champion head coach could also choose to exit after a season, or the Tar Heels could decide to pay the buyout.

Wisconsin: Coming off a bye week following the 27-10 blowout loss at home to Maryland, the Badgers hung around with Michigan this weekend. With third-string quarterback Hunter Simmons in, Wisconsin kept it close for nearly three quarters before Michigan started to pull away. With a $25 million buyout, it’s unclear if Wisconsin will make a move on Luke #2ndChoice this season, even though pressure continues to mount. Sources have mentioned a possible change in administration, while Badger Blitz’s Evan Flood has reported that an idea being floated around is to hire a more hands-on/powerful general manager, who would make the big decisions on the football program. Wisconsin hosts Cockeye this weekend for its homecoming game; how the Badgers look will be important in front of their fans. If Wisconsin moves on from #2ndChoice, it would be the second-highest in college football history. That would not be an easy move for Wisconsin to make; however, they can pay the buyout in monthly installments.

Northwestern: David Braun was under fire in the opening weeks of the season following the 23-3 loss at Tulane. But the Wildcats have rallied with wins over UCLA and ULM to sit at 3-2 entering Week 7 with a visit from Penn State. Sources have told On3 that the initial reaction to the Tulane loss has cooled off. Braun went 8-5 in 2023, followed by 4-8 last season with a 2-7 mark in Big Ten play. Northwestern might need to make some staffing changes this offseason, but sources have said there is faith that Braun can win with the Wildcats. All of this comes as Northwestern prepares to open the new Ryan Field in 2026, which carries an $850 million price tag.

Colorado State: Jay Norvell entered the season without a contract extension and has only one year remaining on his contract. With a $1.5 million buyout before Dec. 1, the pressure is on Norvell to win this season despite going 8-5 last season. Sources have told On3 that because Norvell’s buyout drops significantly after Dec. 1, the Rams could be motivated to wait. But Colorado State is currently 1-4 with Fresno State visiting on Friday.

UAB: After opening the season 2-1, Trent Dilfer’s program has dropped two straight and now enters the brunt of conference play. Dilfer is 6–13 in his tenure in conference play. He has a $2.4 million buyout. Week 7 will be a measuring stick for UAB, which plays at FAU against first-year head coach Zach Kittley.

Akron: Joe Moorhead is showing progress in Year 4 with the Zips. Akron beat one of the top-funded MAC programs in Central Michigan over the weekend. Moorhead is 10–32 in his tenure at Akron. The former Mississippi State head coach is still viewed as an attractive name on the offensive coordinator market if he decides to head in a different direction following the season.

Coastal Carolina: Sources have told On3 that Tim Beck is squarely on the hot seat entering Week 7. Coastal Carolina is coming off a 47-7 conference loss at Old Dominion. The Chanticleers are set to host ULM on Saturday; a loss could go a long way to Coastal’s new administration making a coaching change. Beck is now 16-15 overall and 2-3 on the season and faces pressure to compete for a Sun Belt title. His buyout stands at $1.5 million.

An unserious look at what Forde considers a possible domino effect in the coaching carousel this year

- UCLA hires Kalani Sitake away from BYU

- Steve Sarkisian leaves Texas for BYU. Sarkisian is an alum and would leave due to pressures of the UT job

- Texas hires Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss

- James Franklin leaves Penn State for Ole Miss

- Penn State hires Matt Rhule, a Nittany Lion alum

- Nebraska hires Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz. Forde notes: "Drinkwitz is a savvy portal operator and a relentless recruiter, both necessary traits at Nebraska."

- Missouri hires Ryan Silverfield from Memphis

Matt Rhule is worse VS the top 25 than Franklin. Cant imagine Penn State going in that direction.

Yes, when I was taking my morning "Wilson Dittman", I looked into the toilet bowl and noticed several "Pat Fordes" piled up. We are talking a real logjam.

Rhule to Texas.

Kiffin to Nebraska.

Cignetti to Penn State.

Rhule to Texas.
