OT: Unpopular Opinion - John Daly is WAY Overrated

I don’t think anyone thinks he is one of the greats. He has won two majors, which is an accomplishment for anyone - you can’t take that away from him.

Having said that, his “following” is more about the entertainment value than actually being good at golf, especially nowadays. It’s hilarious to watch him ride around in the #69 golf cart with a McDonald’s Diet Coke and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth at the freaking PGA championship.

I think you’re confusing his cult hero status with actually being regarded as a good player.

One of the greats, of course not. But his 2 majors puts him in front of a ton of well respected players and players who are in the Golf Hall of Fame (Fred Couples, Ian Woosnam, Davis Love III, equal to Mark O'Meara, just to name a small few). He doesn't have the same amount of Tour wins as most of those players (although Woosnam only has 2 PGA Tour wins - but a ton on the European Tour). It is sort of the Brooks Koepka discussion about being good in Majors or being good on the Tour.

It will be interesting to see if he ever gets into the Golf Hall of Fame, just because of his side antics. But, you could also argue that is why he is so popular and he brought more people to golf. He was the real life Happy Gilmore. He smashed the ball, drank and smoked, gambled, is a fat slob compared to most other golfers, wore eccentric outfits, loves him some Hooters, had a mullet, sings and has his own record, and generally just doesn't seem to give a shit about "golf etiquette".

He has actually won 23 different times on different Tours, 5 being on the PGA Tour, and 2 of them Majors. He has won 2 of the 4 Majors, best finish at the Masters was 3rd, and best finish at the US Open was 27th. So, I think many people regard him as a "good" player.
