OT: Tipping

Yeah I figure the waiter needs the $10 difference in 15% vs 20% more than I do.

I worked in the service industry for a number of years in my teens. I have what I would consider reasonable expectations based on having been a server. If those expectations aren't met, I will often still tip 20% bc I realize the importance of tips to their livelihood. I tip very well in general (often times above 20%). However, if you straight suck balls at your job, i'm going to let you know with the tip, or lack there of.
IMO, if it's important to them, it's on them to act like it.

I've worked delivery, I know how much the tips meant to me, and I've got no issue going well north of 20% for anyone who's putting in effort, but if you're unfriendly and lazy, then you don't actually care, and rewarding that just means that crappy service happens to more people.

It really does depend on the setting.

Sit down restaurant with actual waiters/servers, etc? Yep. It varies based on quality of service. I’ve had stellar wait staff who took their jobs seriously and should be rewarded. I’ll tip big if the services is really outstanding. I’ve had garbage wait staff who shouldn’t get anything, but I’ll still give them a small tip and they need to know why.

A couple of others have mentioned the trend to have tips show up as an option when checking out at a chain restaurant or store where there really isn’t any service provided beyond giving you what you ordered at the end of the line. I don’t feel obligated to tip there at all. We see this all the time with the food trucks that come to the area micro breweries. I have to pay and tip you before I see anything other than the menu? That’s a little messed up and I’ll typically pass.

Had a recent argument with a friend who uses the same off site airport parking service I do. He asked me in front of a group of people if I tipped each person involved in the service. For background, there’s one who takes your car at the valet station, and my answer was ‘No’. I tip them when I come back from my trip and they retrieve my car. Then there is a bus driver who takes you from the lot to the airport itself. I’ll tip if they have to handle my baggage, which is only when I travel with the wife. She basically moves with the exception of the lamps and shit in the kitchen every time we fly someplace. Gotta tip the guy for unloading the moving van. Unless I’m traveling for a week +, I take my briefcase and one carry on, and don’t need help. No reason to tip you for driving the bus. Same for the return. With the wife and all her worldly possessions, yes. Me and my two bags you don’t touch, no. When I get back to the valet lot I tip then. Once. Now this guy says I need to tip them all because they depend on the income. Not happening. It’s a nice service and better than the on site airport run lots by a mile, but I’m not dropping $30 in addition to the fee in tips every time I fly. If he wants to prove he’s a better person by pissing away money to people who’re just doing their paid jobs, whatever.

Yeah I feel like a heartless bastard when I say “No” to that guy I’m not giving any company a free tax write off.
It doesnt benefit the company at all. It's a wash for them. You should feel heartless.

Servers 20%
Delivery drivers 15-20%
Takeout 10%
Coffee people maybe $1
Casino dealers whatever I feel like
Cart girls depends on how hot she is

Everyone else pound sand.

Share the same sentiments as a lot here. I’ve gotten better at not tipping for a transaction. Money for a product, no tip.

If a service is involved, and like others have said tips are a key part of their income, tipping is a must. And I no longer tip lower than 20%. But, it’s rare that I go higher than that. High end restaurant with better service… the 20% equates to a larger tip. Plus, it’s easier to calculate 20%.

Something I’ve noticed, the Asian owned joints either don’t put up tip options, or have 0% as an option.

P.s. the worst story I’ve heard was a tip on the parking garage machine in which no human was interacted with.

I’ve stopped going to places that make you feel like an asshole for not tipping a cashier. Haven’t been to a subway in years.
I’ve never felt like this at subway.
