I think he says that because he knows he can't compete with the P2 money. Makes it sound like a moral stance.
Could be but I was never a believer he would stay on top his whole career the way he was recruiting. He got lucky with two elite college qbs in a row and it hurt a lot when guys like Morris, Elliot, and Venerables left plus he whiffed on some assistants he promoted from within

Venebles was big for sure.

2018-2023 were all top 10 classes. A 2 and 6 in there. Hasn't been anything wrong with the recruiting.

Other than missing on a couple of guys that cost a lot more money.

They were quality classes but not Ohio State, Bama, and Georgia type classes on paper. I would equate Clemson to Michigan type classes which is still very good. For a while he was on par with Bama having the top program in the country. He had good continuity with assistants who could develop well and like with any good program, he got raided, and he replaced them with inferior coaches. I still think what Saban did was the craziest thing since he would replace assistants all the time and never have a major letdown.
