Just moved into new house. Smaller town in Northern CO and the internet provider (TDS) has shaky reviews around here. Seems like the best bet to have reliable internet and good speed is to not rent their subpar equipment. I have their 1gig plan.

Any recs for a good router? Seems like WiFi 6 is the way to go to be future proof based on my research? The hookup is in the basement so I'll also either need one with good range to get up to the second floor or a good range extender also.

@LoudHogRider because I know this is your bag.

P.S. - Kate Upton's tits in advance to compensate anyone for their troubles.

We use google mesh. Thanks for the pics

A mesh network is probably the way I'd go if I could do it again.

I have a Netgear Nighthawk XR700. It does a great job prioritizing and has some features I enjoy but the coverage has been a disappointment. I probably have some interference issues though since the reviews I had read were pretty good in that regard.

You'll need what's commonly called a "mesh" router for your Wi-Fi needs. There will be holy wars raised over brands and speeds, etc., but at the end of the day buy another 30-40% more coverage than is advertised to make sure your speeds are fast in all corners of the new abode. I strongly recommend against a single Wi-Fi router (such as the aforementioned Nighthawk) and separate network extenders. Why have multiple "networks" running in your house and have to "join" them each time you go to a different part of the house vs. having ONE network that seamlessly transfers you to the closest, most powerful broadcast device (this is what "mesh" network routers do).

And you're absolutely correct about getting the Wi-Fi 6 standard which offers the highest theoretical speeds. Mesh network routers are offered by a variety of companies (Netgear/ORBI, Google WiFi, LinkSys, TPLink, etc.). I personally like the Netgear ORBI system as they offer a dedicated 5 Ghz backhaul channel to communicated “internally” with the base station and satellite(s), which frees up the remaining spectrum to deliver content via the WiFi network. Your mileage may vary.

I'd also add that if you're going to own your own equipment, don't skip and get a crummy modem (it's what sits between your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and your Wi-Fi router. If it's a cable provider (I don't know TDS as a provider), be sure to get something that supports the DOCSIS 3.1 standard as it's fully capable of supporting the offered 1 GB of download service. If they're a fiber or telephone company type of provider, that DOCSIS advice doesn't apply - completely different animal.

So it's fiber. They do cable and all that also, I believe the fiber is pretty new. But as I understand it there's no need for a modem with their fiber? Would that be what you mean that the DOCSIS3.1 router doesn't apply since it's fiber and not cable, therefore modem not needed?

Long live Mac's and Rocket Inn Pizza. Lived out that way for the better part of 8 years.

Also love her phat titz

Fuller's is closed (new guy bought it and said was gonna open again in May after a remodel...its October 23rd and its still closed with no updates provided)

Mac's drive in has cut their hours to 11-4 M-Sat, almost impossible to find time to go there now.

They also sell Rocket Inn pizza in town now (frozen but that style of pizza cooks great in the home oven) I like it but my wife LOVES Loop Brewing pizza and anytime we get pizza its that.

We moved here in April and are loving the town tho. Its so great having Walmart in town and so many places to eat. Previously our closest Walmart was 45 mins to shithole Colby KS or 55 mins to McCook... thats why we started coming to McCook and my wife and I fell in love with the town. We are legit thinking about staying here and raising our almost 2 year old son/any future kids. Which is wild since neither of us are from here. (wife was born in London and grew up in Africa and says McCook is here favorite town in Nebraska or Kansas and she has been to more small towns in both states than a politician)

No, there’s definitely a modem needed. It will have the thin fiber cable running into it, all will have at least one Ethernet port to connect to your own “owned” Wi-Fi router as well.

My Dad has a fiber ISP at his house at Beaver Lake, and that’s his setup anyway. His ISP provides the fiber modem as part of their monthly service fee, FWIW. I’m guessing yours will be similar.

The DOCSIS standard is a cable ISP standard only, so that will not apply if you’ve opted for their fiber service.

McCook was a nice town. Wasn't gonna be enough in that area for me career-wise to be there forever but it was a good spot.

Didn't Fuller's burn down a couple years ago? I was thinking I heard something like that.

Mac's cutting hours is a damn shame. That place is a national treasure. One of the few things I know of that has remained basically unchanged in the 20+ years I've known it.

Apparently Fullers burned down and then they rebuilt it and it was running fine for another 7 years.

No idea why it’s closed now but it sucks cuz it’s was like the only sit down breakfast spot in town. (Even if not the best quality)

Yeah Macs has cut hours (same as almost every business in the country) due to the labor shortage. They had better hours in the summer cuz of high school kids off in the summer were employees but with school back they cut the hours down big time.

On the other hand since the time you were here North Platte has gotten way way better. Actually pretty cool now with lots of options.

Shit. It's been that long since I've been out that way if it was running for 7 years after the fire. Time flies.

Funny you say that about NP (the Dirty). Was always a methy shithole (still is in many regards I'm sure) but I've heard recently there have been lot if positive improvements around the area and I know they've had some good spots open up. My folks live up at Lake Mac so they make it out that way quite a bit.
