Woke up to a text from my buddy about this this morning. I responded ~100% of Chinese under 30 watch bootlegged movies, which is true within a percentage point or two. The Great Firewall doesn’t really apply to the younger generation, which could be interesting (not really, it’s just a stupid, stupid thing). It’s the blanket killing of VPNs at a moment’s notice (er, annually on June 3rd and September 30th), in combination with TGFW, that’s not so much fun.

Not too sure. At first I just assumed it was indiscriminate, but cell service is still fine, just no chance at connecting to any VPN (I have a pretty good one through my previous US employer). It actually hasn’t been every year, but the Umbrella Movement kinda changed the game, especially here in the south…more frequent outages now. Can be a real son of a bitch to get a good VPN back online.

ISPs can block certain ports & protocols if they so choose. Not too hard to do.

PS: my thread was about how Fight Club (the book/movie) is all about resisting conformity and not caring what society/authority thinks or dictates.... to only become a Chinese propaganda tool. I thought the irony of this and thus my point was self evident, but apparently I was mistaken. (this was the first notification I got for this thread, totally forgot I started it)
