The 2022 Super Six
ByMIKE SCHAEFER 16 minutes agoNebraska’s recruiting classes come in all shapes and sizes and the 2022 class turned out to be among the most chaotic in recent memory.
Perhaps that’s how the 2022 Super Six features the most players to earn votes and saw a few from unlikely positions challenge to be included on the media composite 2022 Super Six.
Since 2014, Husker247 has compiled a running list of individual rankings from various media members of Nebraska’s recruiting classes. This year there were 21 participants in the proceedings. Each participant was asked to rank the top six players in Nebraska’s 2021 class and provide one sleeper. A first place vote is worth six points, second place worth five points, so on and so forth.
In the first year of allowing transfer portal additions to be eligible for the Super Six, voters went wild with every ballot including at least one transfer addition, with most having several included inside the Super Six.
The name appearing the most, on 19 of 21 ballots, was former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson, who comes to Lincoln with high expectations given his success through the air with the Longhorns and Nebraska’s different staff on offense.
Thompson finished with 15 of the 21 first place votes, giving him a resounding lead over the rest of the field, finishing with 101 points total. Expectations will be high and Nebraska will need it to work if Scott Frost hopes to have a sixth year.
Almost co-opted with the enthusiasm for Thompson is the excitement over wide receiver Trey Palmer, who comes to Nebraska from LSU, following his former coach Mickey Joseph and instantly giving the Huskers a weapon to use on special teams and through sub-packages on offense.
Palmer has the ability to play in the slot position and could do some real damage close to the line of scrimmage, potentially opening things up for the Huskers further down field. He finished with 55 points and one-first place vote.
Following Palmer was Omar Brown the multiyear starter for Northern Cockeye and Nebraska’s most recent transfer addition. Brown won FCS Freshman of the Year for his seven interception season in 2019 and then played in both the spring and the fall for Northern Cockeye, but teams largely stayed away from his side of the field. He’ll instantly compete for one of Nebraska’s open spots in the secondary. He finished with 52 points and two first-place votes.
Competition for Brown will come from the No. 4 spot on the list as the Huskers landed Tommi Hill one year after missing out on the talented Floridian. Hill went to Arizona State and played some this season, but change on the staff there prompted the defender to look back at Nebraska who had recruited him hard out of high school. Hill will be fighting for a spot in Travis Fisher’s cornerback rotation.
No. 5 for Nebraska is where we see our first high school player, as Ajay Allen stormed into the composite following his National Signing Day flip from TCU to the Huskers.
Allen is going to be in a fight for playing time along with Nebraska’s 1,325 running backs, but the Louisianan has a close relationship with new running backs coach Bryan Applewhite and that helped make the difference for the Huskers.
No. 6 for Nebraska is actually the highest rated player in the class per 247Sports and that’s defensive back Jaeden Gould, who starred for Bergen Catholic this past year and left USC’s class following the move to replace Clay Helton early in the season. Gould could start his career at defensive back but has the size and athleticism to grow into a hybrid role.
Lots of players earned sleeper votes, but Lincoln Southeast linebacker Jake Appleget finished with four sleeper votes. The defender actually earned his offer as part of a shift in recruiting in the 2022 cycle, as he was able to attend an individual workout in front of Nebraska’s coaches.
No. 1 Casey Thompson
No. 2 Trey Palmer
No. 3 Omar Brown
No. 4 Tommi Hill
No. 5 Ajay Allen
