Went to college with Taylor Mendenhall. He played for Hastings College. Thought his shit didn’t stink. He forgot he played for HC and the football team was terrible. Always got a very arrogant vibe from him.

So you're saying 2 out of 17 kids was the problem? I agree that having kids from KC stay with a coach is shady and obviously against the rules which appears to have cost the program and coach involved but this doesn't scream "national recruiting" to me.

Sounds like parents that were willing to do something I never would didn't read the fine print regarding living arrangements. That could all be a convenient excuse they hoped would never be uncovered, though.

I mean… the team would be massively affected if kids from other districts weren’t coming in to play. I won’t go into everything they do, but a kid living with a coach is just the tip of the iceberg to get kids there. And I promise you most of the kids going there aren’t doing it to get whatever you are talking about academically. Omaha Northwest has nearly the exact same thing, you sending your kid there? That argument is no different than when Omaha North called themselves a magnet school and had a separate area for whatever it was to say Larry Martin wasn’t doing anything crazy.

“It’s for academics” was and is the battlecry for kids being able to transfer every year in the NCAA. Let’s not be naive enough to start stating it for high school.

Every state is dealing with this B.S. now. Happens in the Wichita area, KC area, I know Texas is dealing with it.

KSHSAA (KS HS governing body) is basically powerless because of the way they operate it's upon the AD of the school getting the transfer to do the investigation to see if actual bona fide moves are happening.

It happens in football but in Wichita it's really, really bad in basketball.

I feel like Nebraska athletics is broken. The other big problem is the smaller schools are taking a beating out west as well. The smart move would to start to consolidate a bunch of them at the C1 & C2 level and maybe compete at the B level so it is actually competitive. From what I have heard from a friend: Gothenburg and Cozad both have like less than 40 kids out for football total and Lexington has pretty small numbers as well, but due to overall size they are still C1 and B schools. This is nuts. I graduated with 54 kids and we still had 20 alone from my class that played football and 60+ kids total. That was late 90's early 200o's.

This. 100%. Especially in the name of athletics. Be a kid, make friends, enjoy the time with them, work hard at your athletics but dont make it such a focus in life that youre moving all over for it. If youre good enough, you'll get the opportunities. If youre not, then you still have your childhood to appreciate.

Great article! I don't think it dives deep enough into why the option enrollment issue was changed in 2023 and expeanded in 2024.

Omaha Bryan forfieted most of their seasons in 2021 and 2022 and their whole 2023 season. They played in 2024, went winless, scored in double digits four times and lost a game 96-0. Staring last season Bryan co-ops with another Class A school, Omaha Buena Vista. Together they have the largest student base in the state (over 200 more students than second biggest, the afforementioned GISH). They won three games last year.

They haven't forfieted an entire season, but the Omaha South girls basketball team has forfieted multiple games in recent years.

Benson played with 5 girls on the team in 2023.

Plays at a high level at a much needed position and due to "suggested to me" politics, there's a good chance he won't get the reps he deserves, and I have 4 schools who have either shown interest, or have outright told him he would start varsity if he transfers.

I hate this so much, because I want him to experience HS like I did. Be loyal to your teammates, your friends, and your school. Bust your ass so you make it as difficult for the coaches as possible to not play you. And if they don't, we'll know why, and that's out of your control at that point.

Yes, it's going to cost him varsity time, and he'll miss out on the opportunites he deserved to make memories with in HS because of all this BULLSHIT. It's his choice, and he wants to stay, and I commend him for his decision. But as a Dad, it kills me that he's (potentially) going to miss out on what he's capable of doing. I hope I'm wrong.
