Mickey Joseph gave his final preview on Wednesday of the Huskers' matchup with Rutgers.
Here is a rundown of everything the Nebraska interim head coach said at his lightning round press conference:
Practice preparation
"I thought it went smooth. Love the kids, they’re champions. The coaches did a really good job because it was short week for them to prepare. So they worked late nights trying to get the game plan down. I think last night, they got out of here about 10:30, 11 o'clock. But they worked. The kids came back to work today. So I thought it was really smooth this week."
Travis Vokolek's role
"Yes, I think he will (have a bigger role). He came back from injuries. But I think Travis is a big part of this offense. We look for him to catch balls, but he's a great run blocker. And he also helps pass protect. So he's got a big role in this offense, but I think we'll see more of him.
“Just like a running back, pass protection is overlooked. They want tight ends to be receivers now, but he's a really good run blocker. And I think that gets overlooked.”
On Mark Whipple saying that the players don't believe they can win every game
“I think he's right on. Look at it, now, they haven’t won a lot of games. So if you was on his team, and you lost nine straight, would you think you can win every game? No. It’s human nature to doubt yourself. So we talked to them about not doubting themselves. And we do have high expectations. I think they're in a good place mentally right now as far as what the coaches are asking them to do to win football games. So I think they turned over a new leaf that they they did it. So when they finally got it done Saturday night, I think now they can see it. With these kids these days, they got to see it happen, and I think it happened for him. So I think they will continue to get better.”
Different, better vibes with the players
“I saw it in in the bye week that they bought in about what we asked them to do to play fast. But you got to take credit that the defense really turned everything over when they started playing. And that’s the way we’re gonna play defense. But you can see the swag coming back to them. But you're talking about some kids that's been beat down for three or four years now. We think, ‘Oh, so they're gonna just jump in, they're gonna get into a positive mindset.’ That doesn't happen that easy. They've been getting beat down. So now, they won a game, they see that they can do it. Now they're going to get better every week.”
What does that swag look like?
“35-21. A win against Indiana. That's what it looks like. Not to be disrespectful, I'm never trying to be disrespectful. I'm just straight up, just a straight shooter.”
Changes in tempo and physicality going against Rutgers
“It’s gonna change a lot. We’re going from tempo to a 907 drill where they want to run the ball at us. So it's a totally different mindset. That's why the coaches had to put so much time in trying to get the game plan together and make sure we get the right bodies on the field.
“One thing I can guarantee is you're gonna see 11 defenders out there. I can't tell you what we're gonna do.”
Casey Thompson battling injuries
“He’s sore. But he practiced this week.”
Defense stepping up to help out the offense
“I think that the offense wasn't used to the defense playing that way. If you looked at the last four weeks, I mean, I'd say they’re human, now. And so they're gonna look at it like it like a human being should look at it. Again, they hadn't played great in the last four weeks. So this game, they played lights out football against Indiana. They had, what, seven three-and-outs? But they gotta do their job on offense. And that's what Whip was saying. Everybody’s gotta do their job on offense. Their job is to score points, not to worry about what the defense is doing and that's what we’re trying to stress. The defense is going to play. But the offense, their job is to score points.”
Simplified defense
“Bill and the defensive coaches have a really good game plan this week. So, like I said, it's two different styles. We were tempo, now it’s more power this week. It’s more run game this week. So it's gonna be a different game plan, but they're gonna have a good game plan.”
On the new NIL collective, "The 1890 Initiative"
“That’s been that's been good for university Nebraska. One thing he knows how to do is raise money. You can see the building outside. Matt understands recruiting, and he's going to be great for us with NIL because we have such a great support system with our fans and our backers. And he's gonna do a great job because Matt knows Nebraska in and out. And we trust Matt, what Matt’s gonna, and we’re happy for Matt. But we’re also happy that our kids are gonna be associated with somebody that they know personally.
Any other young players ready to make a similar impact as Malcolm Hartzog?
"No."
What does it say about the players that they have those different vibes?
“It says that they bought into what I was saying, to believe in themselves. We kept encouraging them. We talked to them this morning about a Deion Sanders quote, ’Bet on yourself.’ Look in the mirror and believe in yourself. And we gave them that quote this morning. Look in the mirror and believe in yourself, what you see in that mirror. And I think that right now they feel good, they’re in a good mental state right now and I like where they're at right now.”
