Joseph receives monthly pay bump with interim head coaching responsibility

ByBRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON 74 minutes ago

Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph received a salary increase for his new responsibility.

According to his amended contract, Joseph receives a monthly stipend of $33,350 on top of his originally agreed to contract when he came aboard last December, which pays out $600,000 annually. He receives that as long as he holds that interim head coaching role.

There are bonus possibilities with the role if the Huskers can rally after the bye from their 1-3 start to the 2022 season.

That includes a $150,000 bonus if the team were to play in any bowl game, which would require Nebraska getting to six wins.

If things really turned and got fun, there is a $100,000 bonus if the team ties in the West Division but isn't in the Big Ten title game, or $200,000 if the Huskers appeared in the Big Ten title game, or $300,000 if it won the league title.

Obviously just getting back on the winning side of things right now is the main priority, with Nebraska next returning to action on Oct. 1 when it hosts Indiana.

In addition, Mike Cassano, who took over the receivers for Joseph, receives an additional $4,595 monthly stipend on top of his original salary.

Joseph said his Husker team "absolutely" needed this bye week to reset itself. It also allows him more time to try to get some ducks in a row, after a whirlwind first week in the role that ended with a 49-14 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma. That's OU, not Oklahoma Panhandle, he reminded of a tricky first test he walked into.

He made a big move a day after that game, moving on from defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and promoting Bill Busch to that role. Joseph has also tried to keep Husker recruiting on stable ground, and likes the responses he's received from prospects. He, in fact, had his own plans to recruit in Louisiana on Friday and Saturday.

"Like I said, we're going to do things the right way," Joseph said this week. "We're not going to try to sabotage anything. If we don't get the job and we have to leave here, they're going to say we left this place better than we found it."

Holy shit he’s getting fucked. Literally pennies on the dollar compared to Frost. I get it he’s interim but come on.

33k a month extra for a shit ton more responsibility? So like 99k total until we hire someone new? I’d tell Turd to get fucked on that 33k
Mickey should be happy with the opportunity to prove himself.

Nebraska coach Mickey Joseph reportedly agreed to a restructured contract as the Cornhuskers’ interim coach after the program recently fired Scott Frost.

A source told Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger that Joseph accepted the restructured contract on staff with assurances that he would be retained if there was a head coaching change. Joseph has served as the Cornhuskers associate head coach and wide receivers coach this season.

Prior to accepting the deal, Joseph had not requested the clause that his role be retained even through a coaching change, according to SI’s Richard Johnson. Joseph’s new contract will pay him a monthly stipend of $33,350 on top of his $600,000 yearly salary.

His new contract also comes with a string of incentives, most notably a $150,000 bonus if he leads the Cornhuskers to a non-College Football Playoff bowl game. If Nebraska wins or ties for the Big Ten West title without an “invitation or appearance” to the league’s conference championship game, the program will pay Joseph $100,000.

The news of Joseph’s new agreement comes after he stepped into the interim role for the Cornhuskers’ 49–14 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. Per ESPN, the 35-point margin of victory for the Sooners is tied for the largest in the series since 1990.

While Nebraska (1–3) continues its search for the program’s next long-term coach, Joseph will seek to make the necessary changes for his team during the bye week before returning to action against Indiana on Oct. 1.

Interdasting. The boldest parts are very indeedasting, indeed.

Good. He’s dealing with a fucking disaster.

I think SI is grossly misinterpreting the contract. Mickey's AHC/WR coach deal will go back into effect if he isn't promoted to full time HC. Turd ain't making promises to keep him because that is going to scare candidates away like having ebola
Unless it's already been agreed to by the next HC (cough, cough ... Aranda ... cough, cough)

My thought exactly

I just read the contract and the addendum. They can still terminate him without cause, so the new coach could chose to not retain him (subject to payment of the buyout he would be owed).

Seems that we're still penny pinching. If this kind of shit is any indication, we're going to end up hiring a mediocre HC like BOHL or Klieman for 7m/yr

600k a year seemed low to begin with for an associate head coach title. LJS called his pay bump “modest” uhh yeah id say so lol

Maybe 15 years ago. Go look at what Dante Williams made as USC interim. 600k for WR/AHC was low to begin with for Mickey, he did us a favor.
I give up. What'd he make

Edit: looks like he made $5 million. Seems like the exception
