Joseph receives monthly pay bump with interim head coaching responsibility
ByBRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON 74 minutes agoNebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph received a salary increase for his new responsibility.
According to his amended contract, Joseph receives a monthly stipend of $33,350 on top of his originally agreed to contract when he came aboard last December, which pays out $600,000 annually. He receives that as long as he holds that interim head coaching role.
There are bonus possibilities with the role if the Huskers can rally after the bye from their 1-3 start to the 2022 season.
That includes a $150,000 bonus if the team were to play in any bowl game, which would require Nebraska getting to six wins.
If things really turned and got fun, there is a $100,000 bonus if the team ties in the West Division but isn't in the Big Ten title game, or $200,000 if the Huskers appeared in the Big Ten title game, or $300,000 if it won the league title.
Obviously just getting back on the winning side of things right now is the main priority, with Nebraska next returning to action on Oct. 1 when it hosts Indiana.
In addition, Mike Cassano, who took over the receivers for Joseph, receives an additional $4,595 monthly stipend on top of his original salary.
Joseph said his Husker team "absolutely" needed this bye week to reset itself. It also allows him more time to try to get some ducks in a row, after a whirlwind first week in the role that ended with a 49-14 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma. That's OU, not Oklahoma Panhandle, he reminded of a tricky first test he walked into.
He made a big move a day after that game, moving on from defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and promoting Bill Busch to that role. Joseph has also tried to keep Husker recruiting on stable ground, and likes the responses he's received from prospects. He, in fact, had his own plans to recruit in Louisiana on Friday and Saturday.
"Like I said, we're going to do things the right way," Joseph said this week. "We're not going to try to sabotage anything. If we don't get the job and we have to leave here, they're going to say we left this place better than we found it."
