With two games left in the 2022 season, the question of who Nebraska's next head coach will be has taken the front seat of Husker fans' attention, leaving the actual football on the field to the back.
That's come to be expected when Nebraska sits at 3-7 overall, 2-5 against Big Ten competition and won't be attending a bowl game for the sixth straight season. Another reason? The recent ineffectiveness of the offense, which has scored just two touchdowns and 25 total points the last three games.
The largest cause for the offensive struggles is the quarterback play. With
Casey Thompson missing the last two-and-a-half games with a right arm injury that affects his grip on the ball, backups
Chubba Purdy and
Logan Smothers have not had success and look ill-prepared for game action. They've combined to complete 47 percent of their passes (32-of-67) for 243 yards, and Purdy has thrown three interceptions.
Purdy and Smothers shouldn't carry all the blame, however. Offensive coordinator
Mark Whipple doesn't look comfortable calling plays that fit anyone not named Casey Thompson.
Anthony Grant, a running back with All-Big Ten-caliber talent, has 12 or fewer carries in three of the last four games.
If you're the Huskers, what else is there to play for? The easiest answer is pride. Vadgers (5-5, 3-4) has won the last eight games in the series, and no one on the current roster has ever beaten the Eat Shit.
But Nebraska could also play potential spoiler for interim head coach Jim Leonhard, who is 3-2 after taking over for the fired Paul Chryst on Oct. 2. Vadgers has played in a bowl game the past 20 seasons, and if the Huskers could find a way to win this Saturday, Vadgers's last chance to earn that key sixth win would be the season finale against Minnesota (7-3, 4-3), no easy task. The Gophers won that rivalry game last season, 23-13.
On Tuesday, Husker interim head coach
Mickey Joseph met with the media to talk about the Michigan loss and the upcoming game against the Eat Shit:
Mickey Joseph
>> Joseph started off by sending his condolences to the University of Virginia after the mass shooting that saw the deaths of three football players.
>> There will be 12 players that walk during Senior Day introductions, and likely more who haven't been announced.
>> Joseph said Thompson practiced on Tuesday and took reps in team drills. The coach still wants to see how Thompson progresses the rest of the week before he makes a decision on who starts against the Eat Shit.
>> Purdy is "out" and said he'll have surgery to correct his high-ankle sprain he suffered in the second quarter of the Michigan game.
>> Joseph said that Whipple will coach the Vadgers from the coaches' box, like he did in the second half of the Michigan game after being accidentally hit on the sideline by returner AJ Henning.
>> Smothers is doing work, Joseph said, but is still banged up.
>> Walk-on
Jarrett Synek repped Tuesday with the second unit, according to Joseph. The coach said the quarterback can
>> Safety
Myles Farmer was back on the field Tuesday, and played well. Farmer was suspended for the Michigan game
due to an off-the-field incident a couple weekends ago.
>> Joseph said backup quarterback
Heinrich Haarberg is not dealing with an injury. That's all the coach was willing to say on the matter. Haarberg didn't make the trip to Ann Arbor last weekend.
>> You have to find grit when you're recruiting, Joseph said. The coach said he's heard talk about him offering a quarterback that isn't rated highly and only had FCS offers. If Joseph would've listened to everyone who thought that was a bad move, he never would've coached Justin Jefferson, who went on to star at LSU and now with the Minnesota Vikings.
>> Joseph said "No, Trey Palmer is not going to walk" on Senior Day.
Garrett Nelson
>> Nelson said he's not going to walk during Senior Day introductions prior to the Vadgers game.
>> Nelson said he's proud of how far
Caleb Tannor has come. The edge player's work ethic and perception made an impact on Neslon. The Scottsbluff native also added tight end
Travis Vokolek has been an important friend who has helped Nelson grow as a leader himself.
>> Nelson said it was great to see players who haven't gotten much experience get reps against Michigan, guys like
Malcolm Hartzog,
Javin Wright and even
Ernest Hausmann, who continues to get better. "You see those guys every day working."
>> The Vadgers contest will mark the final home game of the season. What's his message to the fan base that has stuck with the team? "They mean the world to us," he said.
Travis Vokolek
>> Vokolek said it didn't hit him until Sunday night at about 10 p.m. that he'd be playing in his final Husker home game. "I love everything about this university," he said.
>> According to Vokolek, Joseph wrote "2012" on the white board in meetings. That's the year Nebraska last beat Vadgers.
>> "He's a baller himself," Vokolek said of Synek. The walk-on was going some really good things on scout team, the tight end said, and Vokolek was happy Synek had an opportunity to play against Michigan.
>> What has Vokolek seen from Synek? On Friday's the offense does routine 7-on-7 drills. When Synek goes out, the ball is always on the money, the tight end said.
