Nebraska's second bye week of the season has come and gone. The five-game stretch to end the season is now upon the Huskers, who sit at 3-4 overall and 2-2 against Big Ten competition.
Bret Bielema and the No. 17-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini (6-1, 3-1) come to Lincoln this Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. West division game. Illinois has won the last two matchups against Nebraska, including 30-22 last season and 41-23 in 2020.
Like the Huskers, the Illini are coming off a bye week, so both teams had extra time to game plan for each other and get some rest to heal various bumps and nicks.
On Tuesday, Nebraska interim head coach
Mickey Joseph spoke with the media for the first time since the postgame press conference following the loss at Purdoodoo two weekends ago. Here are a few quick hits from what Joseph said.
***This will be updated as the Husker players step to the podium as well.
Mickey Joseph
>> Joseph said he used the bye week to clean things up and, most importantly, get healthy. He wants the team to match the opponent's physicality — and Illinois is a physical football program.
>> Joseph said Illinois has a good scheme on defense and "stick to their guns." They do what they do, Joseph said, and are good at it.
>> Joseph confirmed that inside linebacker
Nick Henrich will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
>> Nebraska has been down a couple offensive linemen in right guard
Broc Bando and utility lineman
Kevin Williams Jr. Bando didn't travel with the team to Purdoodoo a couple weeks ago. Joseph didn't say when Bando or Williams would return, but said Bando is closer than Williams to seeing the field again.
>> Joseph was asked why Illinois' pass defense is so good. He responded, "Men and women lie, numbers don't." The Illini have the top pass defense in the Big Ten, allowing an average of just 143.3 yards per game and 4.7 yards per attempt.
>> Joseph said Nebraska's offense needs to get the run game and
Anthony Grant going against Illinois. Grant has been held to just 47 and 37 rushing yards against Buttgers and Purdoodoo, respectively.
>> Nebraska made multiple offers to junior-college players over last weekend. Joseph said he likes recruiting JUCO players more because they're easier to understand and are hungry to get to the next level. With transfer portal players, he needs to do more homework on why they're in the portal.
>> Joseph said he spoke with his brother, Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, and even former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron while he was in Arizona on a recruiting trip.
>> Joseph said he feels good about inside linebacker
Luke Reimer, who the coach said has been back. Reimer was injured at Buttgers and didn't play at Purdoodoo.
>> The backup running backs will be
Jaquez Yant and
Rahmir Johnson, Joseph said. The coach added
Gabe Ervin Jr. will play when his turf-toe injury allows him to.
>> Joseph said he wants the Memorial Stadium crowd to create a difficult environment to play in on Saturday against Illinois. He wants the crowd noise to make an impact when the Illini are on offense.
Turner Corcoran
>> Corcoran said Illinois's defense mainly runs a five-man odd front defense and are really good at it. The Illini have 23 sacks, second most in the Big Ten.
>> Corcoran said Nebraska's pass protection is "not as good as we want it to be." He said
Donovan Raiola, the offensive line coach, has been adamant about improving it and it's up to the players to execute.
>> Corcoran has been moved around between tackle and guard during games. It's not the easiest thing to do, Corcoran said, but the offensive line does practice for that possibility during the week.
>> Corcoran said he just relaxed during the bye week. Said the time off was beneficial, both mentally and physically.
>>
Henry Lutovsky has been thrown into the fire at right guard as a second-year player, which is similar to Corcoran, who played early in his career. "I know he's (Lutovsky) going to get the job done," Corcoran said. He also added that each player has their own way of dealing with playing early in their careers and having things not go well.
Casey Thompson
>> Thompson said Illinois has great size on its defense, is really good on third down and does a great job of causing pressure with strength and movement.
>> Thompson said he spent the bye week in the training room, watching film and spent time with family before coming back to Lincoln. "I feel good coming out of the bye week," he said.
>> What's Illinois' defense doing with their coverage to be so good? It disguises their man and zone coverages well, and in Thompson's opinion, should have more than the 12 interceptions it currently has.
>> Thompson said receiver
Trey Palmer is continuing to get better, and has improved his route running the more he's played and practiced.
>> The Huskers are still alive in the race for the West division. Thompson said he's just focusing on Illinois, and Illinois only. "I try not to focus on what everyone else is doing," he said.
>> It's harder on the road as an offense, according to the quarterback. Opposing stadiums have unique ways of distracting offenses. That impacts communication, but Thomson enjoys playing on the road because he likes being the villain in those situations. As for this weekend's home game, Thompson said he wants "Husker nation to be loud" when Illinois is on offense.
>> Thompson gave a shoutout to center
Trent Hixson, who has done a good job of setting protections. Setting the protections and executing them are two different things, of course.
>> What does Thompson like about Joseph as the head coach? Joseph is more demanding, more aggressive and more vocal on what he wants from Thompson instead of being passive and letting things go. "I want him to be around for sure," Thompson said.
>> Thompson said Illinois' defensive line and front seven does a great job stopping the run and creating havoc in offensive backfields. Thompson said he's been really impressed with Illinois' third-down defense.
>> Thompson said
Tommi Hill is "coming along" and has the speed and skillset to excel at receiver. The dynamic athlete just needs more practice time and game reps at the position. Thompson said he understand making a position change in the middle of the season isn't the easiest thing to do, and that it'll take time.
Marcus Washington
>> Washington said he's excited to see an old friend, Isaiah Williams, who's now a talented receiver for the Illini's offense after beginning his career at quarterback. Washington and Williams are both alums of the now-closed Trinity Catholic High School in St. Louis.
>> Washington said he understands defenses will bracket and double Palmer from now on. That will open more opportunities for Washington and others, and he said he'll need to obviously step up.
>> Washington said he went back home to St. Louis to spend time with his son and watch college football.
Eteva Mauga-Clements
>> Mauga-Clements said Illinois' offense isn't fancy. It doesn't mess around with what it wants to do — it'll come right at you with a strong run game and see if you can stop it.
>> Mauga-Clements said he enjoyed the bye week. "It was crucial, this bye week couldn't have come at a better time," he said. Mauga-Clements also added he thought the team really practiced well and with good energy on Tuesday.
>> Mauga-Clements will be playing an increased role at inside linebacker with Henrich being out for the season. He also confirmed Reimer is back at practice.
>> Mauga-Clements said Ernest Hausmann has been handling himself well even though he hasn't had the best of starts to his career.
Garrett Nelson
>> Nebraska will be facing physical football teams going forward, so Nelson said practicing with a game-like physicality is going to be important.
>> Will it feel a bit weird without Henrich for the rest of the season? "He's our middle linebacker, but he's also my best friend." Nelson said Henrich is doing well with the injury and called him a warrior.
>> What will this final five-game stretch show Nelson about Nebraska's team? "If we can stop the run and if we can tackle," he responded. "These last five weeks are true Big Ten football."
