Mickey Joseph updates QB situation, embracing opportunity and staying true to the run game
ByBRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON 10 minutes ago
The Huskers will be without quarterback Casey Thompson for the second straight game, Mickey Joseph confirmed after Thursday's practice.
Nebraska's interim coach believes his squad is eager for the opportunity to take on No. 3 Michigan, even as the NU enters as more than four-touchdown underdogs.
"The guys came out this morning with a great attitude. I thought they detailed the entire practice," Joseph said. "I thought they focused in all three phases of the game. I think they understand that we have to go in there and play at a high level against a very football team. It's one of the greatest venues in college football that you can play in. So we got to be ready for the challenge and I think they're going to be ready for it."
More from Joseph on that, and the QBs, staying true to the run game on offense, and the Michigan tunnel that's been in the news some this season.
WHAT'S THE UPDATE ON CASEY THOMPSON? DID HE PRACTICE THIS WEEK?
"No, Casey did not practice. He threw a little bit yesterday and he threw a little bit today."
Is he officially out?
"Yes."
DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO START AT QB?
"I think we're all going to find out Saturday at about 3:30 (EST), I'll let you guys know."
ANTHONY GRANT GOT GOING A BIT LAST WEEK. HOW DO YOU FEEL HE'S SEEING HOLES AS YOU TALK ABOUT NEEDING TO BE HAPPY WITH THOSE 3- TO 4-YARDS IN THE RUN GAME?
"The running backs that gain a lot of yards, it's blocked clean every play. It's a clean block. But when it's not there, I don't want him to bounce it. I want to knock a hole in it, put a dent in the defense. But as coaches, WE got to be happy with three yards. We got to be happy with that."
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SITUATION AT SAFETY? STILL LIKELY PHALEN SANFORD AND DESHON SINGLETON FOR FARMER?
"Yes. They have to go in and step in with Myles not being in there. But I have faith in those two kids that they'll get it done."
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE D-LINE ROTATION?
"Yes, we talk about it before every game, how the rotation is going to be with each position. And that rotation, I'm happy with that rotation. Because I think in that D-line position you have to play multiple bodies and I think Daws (Mike Dawson) does a really good job with his rotation. And if I don't like it, I'll let him know, but I'm happy with that."
WHAT PROGRESS DID YOU SEE OUT OF LOGAN AND CHUBBA AT PRACTICE THIS WEEK?
"Same thing as last week. They had good practices. ... They practiced well. But you don't get graded on practice, you get graded on gameday. So it's about who can manage the team on a gameday. Just like they say about coaching, this would be a great profession if we don't have to play the games, but we have to play the games. So they have to be able to manage this team during the game. You can do it at practice, but I got to see you manage this team during the game."
DO YOU HAVE MORE PLAN-WISE KNOWING THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT GUYS WITH VARIED SKILL SETS?
"The No. 1 thing we've got to do, we've got to be able to hand that ball off. Hand that ball off. Slow it down. That's what we've got to do."
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN FROM CASEY AS A LEADER HELPING LOGAN AND CHUBBA?
"He's been in every meeting and he's been in every practice, in their ear, talking to them. But Casey wants to play. He's a competitor and he wants to play but he understands right now that he can't play at a high level. So we won't put him out there. But he's been really good as a leader out there with those young quarterbacks."
YOU HAD A GREAT LINE BEFORE YOUR FIRST GAME AS HEAD COACH ABOUT 'THEY'RE PUTTING IT ON TV, IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY.' DO YOU SEE THE KIDS EMBRACING THAT THIS WEEK?
"Yes, because I don't think they back down from anybody since I've been here, since before I got here, you can watch. They don't back down. They don't throw in the white flag, so you've got to respect that out of those kids. They're busting their butts, not getting the results they want, but they understand that this is a great opportunity and I explained to them that Michigan is playing for something. ... They're playing to be the No. 1 seed in the (playoffs), so we understand that. But I think they're OK and they understand the opportunity."
IS GABE ERVIN AVAILABLE AT RUNNING BACK?
"Yes, he practiced all week, so he looked good all week, so he'll be available."
YOU EVER COACHED IN THE BIG HOUSE?
"No, never coached there, but it's a great venue. You hear about it all the time. But at the end of the day the game is going to be played and I don't think I'll be in awe, because it's football."
THERE HAVE BEEN SOME INCIDENTS THIS YEAR IN THE TUNNEL WITH BOTH TEAMS USING IT TO GET TO THE LOCKER ROOM. ANYTHING YOU DO DIFFERENTLY THERE?
"No, I have faith in the University of Michigan, the administration, that they're going to do everything in their power to make sure we don't have an altercation ... And we have a plan to make sure our plans get in the tunnel and get in their safely. But we're not going there for that. We're not talking about the altercation and what happens in the tunnel. We're going to be professional like we always are and we're going to get our kids in, and get our kids out. But I don't see a problem happening."
HAS TREY PALMER HAD ANY WAVERING IN CONFIDENCE/FRUSTRATIONS FROM THE LAST TWO WEEKS?
"No. I've known this kid since he was 15. You're going to have some bad games. You play football long enough, do anything long enough, you're going to have some bad days. He's come back this week to practice, but no, he will never lose confidence. He's not built like that."
