Michigan State Presser

I remember more people wanting Snyders kid to come here and be our special teams guy. I don’t know how much Busch can really do as an analyst?
At time of hire I recall it being widely regarded as a brilliant move that would have a significant impact.

edit: at least as an acceptable alternative when Snyder didn’t work.

We are complaining about punter recruiting now? Not our punters. But our punter recruiting…who was our last “big get” in punter recruiting? Lightbourn? How’d that go?

I’m sorry but HCSF is right on with this presser. We have a unit that when something is called, they miss the mark by 40 yards width wise on the field. That’s insane and I don’t think that’s a coaching issue.
Year 4 and you are still White Knighting for Frost? He is in charge of the program so the buck stops with him. It was his decision not to have a Special Teams Coach and to keep underperforming coaches on his staff. He loves blaming others when it is obvious that we are a poorly coached team.

Love the “white knighting” tag

what if I told you that I can think that he’s not doing a great job AND that not every single thing that goes wrong is 100% a coaching problem. Culp missing kicks this year - likely not a coaching issue. Punters shanking a punt or kicking to the wrong side of the field while performing every other detail correctly, probably not a coaching problem.

Who’s job is it to punt well? Maybe the punter who practices punting every single day that transferred in from a B1G school that thought he was pretty damn good. That goes against another well regarded D1 level punter in practice every day?

Our punter depth is arguably as deep as any school and I hate that you guys just made me type that.

is it really so far fetched to call this an execution problem rather than a coaching problem?
Ok, so Scott isn’t responsible for the punters performance - Scott is still responsible for holding the punter accountable for said punters performance. If that punter isn’t performing it’s on Scott to find an alternative. If Scott can’t do that then what does that say about Scott’s ability to find better alternatives, especially when it’s been going on for FOUR years?

Couldn't better coaching help correct these problems? Coaching Matters.

So just to be clear - is your take that they took the B1G kicker of the year, coached him to be that, and then said “fuck it - this year let’s actively coach him to be worse”

Execution matters too.

year 4
special teams laughably incompetent, unforced errors nearly every game, sometimes multiple, for four years
perhaps the worst ST in the country, in year 4
not the coaches' fault 🤡
Perhaps the worst in the country?

It's more likely that it's the worst all around special teams in the history of football.

But when is a 3 + year trend of losing in ridiculous ways a coaching issue

These are coaching issues for successful coaches. We don't have one of those.

Yore right if we have crap kicking specialists for 4 years we should just wait em out and not try to get better

What’s funny is it really doesn’t matter at this point if it actually was a coaching issue or a execution issue. It’s a L. It’s a do or do not industry. Except if you’re alumni at Nebraska. Then apparently you get a longer leash….

Oh btw, Scott, you got the ball back after the punt return. You didn’t do shit with it. Your defense was lights out in the second half and your offense didn’t do anything. You completely flamed out in OT too. One play doesn’t define a game. The punt does however become a convenient excuse if you lose.

Why do opposing teams execute better than Frost-coached teams? Tucker is in Y2 at MSU and BB in Y1 at Illinois yet their teams seem to do the little things that turn games into the win column. 14-23 is not an accident, it's the reflection of many things done poorly and coaching/execution go hand in hand.

Frost’s teams just don’t listen to him unfortunately. Someday he’ll get some guys in the program that will listen and do what he says. Not his fault they don’t listen.

Weren’t people begging for Dawson to take over special teams because he’s had success everywhere he’s done it? That mixed with Busch coming on staff in the analyst role. Now that hasn’t worked well…and everyone suddenly says “see! Frost can’t get a good assistant to coach ST!”
I wanted a full time assistant handling special teams. I think Dawson is the only guy on staff with experience coaching special teams, but I don't know that I was begging for him specifically
