I think the honest answer is it depends upon who you're talking to. A civilian / collector / hunter / shooting enthusiast might have an entirely different response than someone from the gubmint or an anti-2A advocate.
And - to the best of my knowledge - there are no restrictions on the number of firearms an individual can own, I believe there are restrictions on the number you can acquire within a certain time period before you bump up against the need to have a FFL (Federal FIrearms License). Not sure what the exact restrictions are, so "buy steady" and often!
